Viewpoint School is currently seeking a Teacher ofPhysical Education and Head Coach of Boys Soccer. The Teacher of Physical Education provides guidance, leadership, supervision, training, and coaching to the team while helping individuals perform at their best individually and as a team at the interscholastic competition events.
Primary Functions
Physical Education Teacher
- Organize games and challenges that promote physical activity among children and young adults from kindergarten to high school.
- Develop motor skills and physical development among younger children and proper exercise and eating habits among older children.
- Create engaging daily and detailed long-term lesson plans.
- Present youth-appropriate curriculum in physical education.
- Develop, coordinate, and facilitate physical activities.
- Monitor, maintain, and upgrade all fitness equipment
- Report all program activities and changes directly to the supervisor
- Participate in all department and staff meetings
- Creates a classroom community that maintains the school's high social expectations for students.
- Helps reinforce the School's mission, goals, and operating principles within all aspects of the Viewpoint School community including, but not limited to, his or her classroom practices, model lessons, and efforts to build a model classroom community.
- Actively works to improve his or her own practice in order to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for excellent instruction and to generally increase his or her effectiveness.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Boys Varsity Soccer Head Coach
- Instructs athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success
- Provide instruction that teaches life lessons through athletics by valuing the journey of the athletic experience over solely the end result.
- Create, in conjunction with the Director of Athletics, expectations of student-athletes and families who participate in the Upper School soccer program.
- Hold a preseason meeting with parents/guardians to share these expectations and clearly delineate the roles of coaches, student-athletes, and parents/guardians who are a part of the program.
- Maintains discipline, positive morale and cooperation within the school athletic program and school community
- Build a positive varsity team community and program community across Lower School, Middle School and Upper School levels.
- Plans and runs practices. Supervises practices, games, team trips, and student-athletes
- Stay current with knowledge of technical aspects of soccer and have a willingness to continue to learn and examine new ideas specifically pertinent to soccer and to the coaching profession in general
- Maintains inventory of uniforms/school equipment issued
- Oversee scheduling for applicable Upper School teams in conjunction with Director of Athletics
- Establishes lettering criteria
- Establishes a policy with Director of Athletics for student-athletes and/or parents to address issues or concerns within the Upper School boys soccer program
- Updates the Athletic Director regularly about any issues, concerns, or highlights
- Work with Director of Strength and Conditioning to give student-athletes the opportunity to develop strength, speed and agility skills to aid in development of sport-specific skill base
- Offer off-season opportunities, aligned with CIF regulations, for those student-athletes not currently involved in another Viewpoint athletic program
- Support the multisport Viewpoint student-athlete and their desire to compete for Viewpoint teams in other seasons of sport.
- Use of film (practice and/or game film) as a teaching tool for development of skills, teamwork and overall sport IQ.
- Develop and implement a plan for scouting future opponents at the varsity level.
- Represent team at all league, Southern Section and CIF state meetings
- Support and guide those student-athletes who express a desire to pursue the college recruitment process. Work hand and hand with College Counseling to educate players and family about the process, their roles, and realistic options at the college level.
- Distribute and collect departmental-approved end of season survey of student-athlete experience
- Responsible at all times for the safety of Viewpoint student-athletes
Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in physical education and prior coaching experience at a the youth level
- Works in a highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts
- Know the rules, strategies, and techniques of the sport
- Know about physical fitness and safety
- Ability to organize and supervise a sports program/team
- Preferred previous coaching experience in assigned sport
- Good role model to students
- In addition to the position described above, you agree to perform other duties and responsibilities as shall be assigned by Head of School or other supervisor
Compensation: Anticipated compensation is $65,000 - $85,000 depending on experience.
