Job description

Boston Public Schools seeks an exceptional Band/General Music Teacher who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of educators. This is an exciting opportunity for teachers committed to high achievement, equity, and innovation.

Reports to:

Principal/Head of School

Responsibilities
  • Teach Band and Music classes
  • Develop a comprehensive music program tailored to students' needs
  • Accompany elementary general music performances using guitar or piano
  • Provide instrumental instruction in brass, woodwind, and percussion, including planning, implementation, and assessment
  • Prepare students for school and community ensemble performances
  • Review instructional materials for bias using the 7 Forms of Bias Protocol
  • Maintain inventory of instruments and sheet music
  • Apply effective teaching techniques such as Orff, First Steps/Conversational Solfege, or Gordon Learning Theory
  • Specialization in brass or woodwind family is preferred

Qualifications - Required
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Valid Massachusetts Teaching License in Music (All Levels)
  • Meet all state and federal licensing requirements to be considered Highly Qualified
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. by start date
Qualifications - Preferred
  • Experience in urban schools
  • Fluency in one of BPS's official languages (Spanish, Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Somali)
  • Certification in core content and additional areas such as Moderate Disabilities or ESL
  • Strength in brass or woodwind instruments
