JOB GOAL: We believe that all children are capable of attaining high levels of educational achievement in preparation for productive, rewarding lives and responsible citizenship. As a Multilingual Learner Teacher, the goal is to ensure that Multilingual Learners (ML) attain high levels of academic and linguistic proficiency through systematic, explicit, and standards-based English Language Development (ELD) instruction aligned to the WIDA 2020 ELD Standards and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree required
• Master’s degree preferred, preferably in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or related field

Professional Certification:

• MA DESE ESL certification required
• MA DESE SEI endorsement required

Specialized Knowledge:

• Ability to identify both formal and informal assessments that measure students skills
• Ability to evaluate/analyze formal and informal data in order to provide recommendations based on data
• Knowledge of best practices in teaching to individuals and small groups with a highly systematic approach
• Thorough understanding of and commitment to the principles and practices of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice as they relate to student engagement and opportunity
• Ability to differentiate instruction and assess learning using a variety of methods
• A strong foundation in student-centered pedagogy
• Ability to design and implement systematic, explicit ELD instruction, including the teaching of language forms, functions, and discourse structures aligned to content area themes and topics
• Strong understanding of second language acquisition theory and the progression of academic language development across proficiency levels
• Working knowledge of the WIDA 2020 ELD Standards
• Demonstrated ability to analyze language and academic data to inform instructional planning
• Ability to use an asset-based lens to affirm and leverage students’ linguistic, cultural, and experiential strengths in order to cultivate a strong sense of identity, belonging, and agency within the classroom and school community

Preferred Experience:

• Experience teaching in a diverse public school preferred
• Experience working with Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) and English learner students with disabilities (ELSWD) is preferred.
• Experience with Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Classroom, etc.) and PowerSchool preferred, but will train the right candidate.

Skills:

• Must have the ability to collect and analyze data in order to make recommendations for instructional programming
• Must have well-established verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to share information and resources as appropriate, including strong written communication skills.

• Plan and deliver systematic, explicit, and standards-based English Language Development (ELD) instruction using curriculum aligned to the WIDA 2020 ELD Standards and Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
• Teach ELD to Multilingual Learner students in Pull Out or Self-Contained ELD classrooms and/or through Push In or Co-Taught ELD in Sheltered Content Immersion (SCI) classrooms.
• Practice culturally and linguistically sustaining communication with students, families, and colleagues.
• Maintain high expectations for all students and serve as a facilitator of student learning.
• Organize and apply a variety of teaching techniques, strategies, materials, and technology to maximize the learning of each child, individually and in group settings.
• Develop, implement, and consistently monitor language proficiency goals for ML students who require Success Plans.
• Keep parents informed about student language development progress during each marking period in their requested language.
• Assess student progress using a variety of WIDA-aligned formative and summative assessments, providing students and parents with specific feedback, and using the results to adjust instruction as needed.
• Collaborate with Special Educators, ML Educators, Instructional Coaches, Department Heads, the Director of Multilingual Learning, and other Instructional Leaders to ensure students needs are being met.
• Co-plan, co-teach, co-assess, and co-reflect with assigned Sheltered Content Immersion (SCI) core-academic teacher(s) using a variety of co-teaching models.
• Keep abreast of current developments in the field of Multilingual Education and continue to deepen understanding of the discipline(s).
• Administer the annual ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 Online test for ML students.
• Must be committed to the vision of high expectations for achievement, equal access to high levels of instruction, the achievement of academic and linguistic proficiency for all students, and the closing of the achievement gap.
