The Menta Education Group is seeking a Special Education Teacher Intern for a 10-month placement at Southwest Academy, in Phoenix, AZ. The role offers a self-contained classroom, with a social-emotional learning framework and inquiry-based academics designed to support diverse learners.

Responsibilities include teaching core subjects, personalizing instruction, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to achieve positive outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • Experience working with students with a range of disabilities—ASD, ED, TBI, mild to moderate cognitive/developmental disabilities—preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to multitask.

Job description

As a Special Education Teacher Intern at The Menta Education Group, you will have the freedom and ability to educate a small classroom of students in a self-contained setting. Our social-emotional learning environments offer engaged and inquiry-based academics combined with a P.B.I.S. structure.

Location: Southwest Academy, Phoenix AZ, Maryvale Village.

Staff Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Mon‑Fri, following a 10-Month School Calendar.

Required: Bachelor’s Degree.

Strongly Preferred: Arizona Substitute Teacher Certification.

Required: Willing to return to a university to obtain a tuition‑reimbursed degree in Special Education Teacher License.

Responsibilities
  • Engage in the opportunity to better understand special education curriculum and how to teach diverse learners.
  • Teach all subjects in a classroom setting.
  • Provide a differentiated learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, including curriculum and clinical staff to yield positive results for the students.
  • Gain support on-campus from other teachers, administrators, curriculum staff, clinical staff, and various support staff that are Menta employees.
  • Have the freedom and ability to personalize learning.
  • Provide a social-emotional learning environment.
  • Have a classroom size of around 10 students with paraprofessional support in the classroom.
  • Receive professional development and support.
Qualifications
  • One of the following: Valid General Education Teaching Certificate with the willingness to pursue Special Ed Certification OR Bachelor’s Degree in a related field such as Psychology, Social Work, Applied Behavior Analysis, Disabilities Studies, Sociology or Health & Human Services.
  • Experience working with students with a range of special education disabilities including autism, emotional disturbance, traumatic brain injury, mild to moderate cognitive and/or developmental disabilities.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Well-organized and able to multitask.
  • Possess a positive attitude.

Southwest Academy is a rigorous school offering a short-term placement for students facing suspension from their home schools, reducing the likelihood of repeat behaviors. The academy provides academic and social-emotional support to high-risk children and adolescents aged 5-22, with a no-refusal, no-suspension, no-expulsion policy.

Salary ranges for this position are based on a 10-month academic calendar and adjusted for experience, education and credentials. For positions that follow the school-year schedule, the salary ranges are calculated accordingly. For positions that are part-time, the salary is calculated hourly with a base defined by the applicable year.

Special Education Classroom Instruction: $59,000 – $70,000 General Education Instruction: $45,200 – $49,360 Classroom Support: $24,000 – $43,640 Student Services: $38,000 – $70,000 Clinical: $61,000 – $70,000 Medical: $35,000 – $55,000 Maintenance Support: $40,000 – $55,000 Administrative Support: $28,000 – $45,000 Hourly Position: hourly compensation rates may be determined based on an applicable annual salary.
