Job Overview

The Teacher plans, designs, implements, and assesses an appropriate instructional program in a high school environment that guides and encourages a diverse group of students at all levels to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Responsibilities include designing learning experiences, monitoring student progress, communicating with parents, developing assessments, creating classroom expectations, preparing students for assessments, and supporting students outside the classroom, such as in hallways, field trips, and after-school activities.

High school teachers may be assigned to teach students from ninth through twelfth grade, helping them transition from adolescence to young adulthood and preparing for life after high school. Teachers are expected to promote a challenging, equitable, empowering, and developmentally responsive environment, building on middle school fundamentals and supporting various curriculum pathways to facilitate students' transition beyond high school. They motivate students by creating authentic, engaging, rigorous, and relevant learning experiences.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Establish a safe and supportive environment conducive to learning, fostering student agency, ownership, and reflection.
  • Design and implement authentic, engaging learning experiences aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning and LCPS curriculum, utilizing effective strategies and diverse instructional materials.
  • Use a variety of resources and technology to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Personalize instruction based on students' needs and manage time effectively to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Assess student growth relative to educational goals and outcomes, adhering to LCPS assessment and grading policies.
  • Analyze assessment data to refine teaching practices and improve student achievement.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with students and parents about progress and instructional objectives.
  • Manage classroom behavior to create a conducive learning environment and assist in behavior management throughout the school.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and support staff to enhance student learning and mastery of content.
  • May supervise teacher assistants, student teachers, and volunteers.
  • Participate actively in professional learning communities to deepen curriculum understanding and develop assessments.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Virginia teaching license or eligibility, endorsed in the appropriate subject area.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of subject content, curriculum, and effective teaching methodologies.
  • Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional practices.
  • Proficiency in multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Effective collaborative, oral, and written communication skills, with strong human relations abilities.
Physical Requirements

Regularly talking and exchanging ideas verbally, conveying detailed instructions accurately and clearly. Normal cognitive abilities are required, including learning, recall, and application of practices and policies. Frequently sitting or remaining stationary for long periods. Occasionally exerting up to 25 pounds of force for lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects.

Months/Days/Hours: 10 months, 197 days, 7 hours per day

Salary Level: Licensed
