Job Overview

The Teacher plans, designs, implements, and assesses an appropriate instructional program in a high school environment that guides and encourages a diverse group of students at all levels to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Responsibilities include designing learning experiences, monitoring student progress, communicating with parents, developing assessments, creating and reinforcing classroom expectations, collaborating with school administration to prepare students for assessments, and supporting students outside the classroom in hallways, field trips, and after-school activities.

At the high school level, the Teacher may be assigned to teach students from ninth through twelfth grade. The role involves promoting a challenging, equitable, empowering, and developmentally responsive environment. Teachers help build on middle school fundamentals and prepare students through various curriculum pathways for life after high school. They motivate students by creating authentic, engaging, rigorous, and relevant learning experiences.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Establish a safe, supportive learning environment that fosters student agency, ownership, and reflection.
  • Design and implement engaging learning experiences aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning and LCPS curriculum, utilizing effective strategies and diverse instructional materials.
  • Use a variety of resources and technology to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Personalize instruction based on student needs and manage time effectively to maximize learning.
  • Assess student growth relative to educational goals and outcomes.
  • Follow LCPS assessment and grading policies and analyze data to improve teaching practices.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with students and parents about progress.
  • Manage classroom behavior to ensure a conducive learning environment and assist in behavior management across school settings.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and support staff to enhance student learning and mastery.
  • Potentially supervise teacher assistants, student teachers, and volunteers.
  • Participate actively in the school's professional learning community to deepen curriculum understanding and develop assessments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college
  • Virginia teaching license or eligibility, with endorsement in appropriate subject area
  • Knowledge of subject content, curriculum, and effective teaching methodologies
  • Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional practices
  • Proficiency in multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning
  • Ability to establish collaborative relationships with students, colleagues, and parents
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and excellent human relations skills

Physical Requirements

Regularly talking, conveying instructions, and expressing ideas verbally. Ability to learn, recall, and apply policies. Frequently sitting or remaining stationary for long periods. Occasionally exerting up to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, or pull objects.

FLSA status: Exempt

Months/Days/Hours: 10 months, 197 days, 7 hours per day

Salary Level: Licensed
