Qualifications:
  • Kansas Teaching Certificate/License, SPED Gifted endorsement required (or willingness and ability to pursue SPED Gifted endorsement)
  • “Highly qualified” status according to KSDE and federal regulations
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
Job Goal

Provide an effective program of instruction based on the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.

Performance and Responsibilities:
  • Builds instruction upon previously learned materials.
  • Uses a variety of teaching materials and techniques as appropriate for the content area.
  • Uses a variety of teaching materials and techniques as appropriate for all students/adults as assigned.
  • Provides for regular assessment of student/adult needs and progress.
  • Provides for appropriate re-teaching, adaptation, and/or extensions if needed.
  • Provides evidence of individual student/adult learning.

  • Cooperates with others regarding the selection, use, and sharing of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students.
  • Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Establishes and maintains communications with students, parents, colleagues and others as related to assignment.

Additional Responsibilities for Special Education Teachers:
  • Maintain current knowledge of special education laws and regulations and meet their requirements.
  • Perform accurate, functional and relevant assessment of individual student's learning needs for eligibility and educational programming.
  • Maintain current and accurate Individual Education Plans.
  • Work in a problem-solving manner with other staff and parents to develop a program that supports student growth and success.
  • Work collaboratively with staff to develop appropriate modifications, curriculum, and educational environments for students with exceptionalities.
  • Work with a variety of students with exceptionalities from all legally recognized domains.
  • Will be required to attend a Special Education Academy.
