What we offer teachers:

Oakland Unified has received substantial funding to support Grow Our Own pathway programs including Classified-to-Teacher, our Oakland Teacher Residency and the Salesforce Recruitment & Retention Initiative for Middle Schools programs. We are invested in creating and maintaining affinity spaces for educators that support retention and socio-emotional support. We provide extensive professional development and training for experienced and new teachers, including National Board Certification support in partnership with UC Berkeley, innovative curricula, ongoing mentoring and advancement opportunities. In addition to professional development and training:

  • We accept up to twelve years of full time teaching experience in other school settings on the salary schedule (please see our salary schedule here: OUSD Salary Schedules Ranges - Oakland Unified School District)
  • Full medical, dental, and vision benefits, including Flexible Spending Accounts, plus life insurance and long-term disability coverage for teacher and dependents at no cost to full time teachers
  • Retirement benefits through the CALSTRS Retirement System
  • BCLAD Stipend - $3,000 with a valid BCLAD or Bilingual authorization.
  • In partnership with Rooted, Oakland Unified Educators have access to more affordable housing.

A successful applicant will be able to:

  • Design & Deliver Equitable Instruction: Plan and implement rigorous, standards-based, and culturally relevant curriculum that ensures academic excellence for all students, including English Language Learners, students with disabilities, and historically underserved populations.
  • Foster a Joyful Classroom: Create a safe, welcoming, and liberating classroom environment that is grounded in principles of Restorative Justice, allowing students to thrive emotionally and socially.
  • Utilize Data for Growth: Regularly assess student progress using multiple measures (formal and informal) and use performance data to drive instructional modifications and personalize learning.
  • Engage with Community: Build strong, positive, and collaborative relationships with students, families, and the wider Oakland community to support student success.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree, must be eligible for employment in the US and pass a criminal background check. Candidates must possess, or be willing to earn, a California teaching credential. Candidates have two current professional references on file, including one from a previous supervisor.
