Job Summary:
The Teacher - Elementary School Autism/SELS is a vital and supportive member of the PCSD team, working collaboratively with educators, support staff, and administration to achieve the shared goal of ensuring all students receive the education they need to succeed both today and tomorrow. This role is performed within a school environment, overseen by the school principal, where teamwork and dedication to student success are paramount.

All staff are expected to fully adhere to the ethical standards set forth by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, continuously demonstrating a strong understanding of the tasks and responsibilities their roles require. Moreover, they must embody the core belief that every action we take is driven by a commitment to the best interests of our students.

Job Description

Position Title: Autism Teacher

Salary Schedule: State Based Plus Local Supplement

Department: Exceptional Students Education Program/School

Job Code: 116700

Reports To: Principal and Coordinator of ESEP

Work Schedule: 188 days/8 hr.

Grade/Level: N/A

FLSA: Exempt

Primary Function: Ability to provide instruction, assessing and encouraging student progress. Ability to manage the learning environment, complying with state and district level regulations and policies.

Working Conditions:

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard.

Hearing and speaking to exchange information.

Seeing to read a variety of materials.

Sitting for extended periods of time.

Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to file materials.

Qualifications:

A valid Georgia Teaching Certificate in assigned teaching field as required by the Professional Standards Commission.

Special Education General Curriculum or Special Education Adaptive Curriculum, depending on assignment.

Appropriate content area(s).

Must possess and maintain valid and appropriate license, certificate and/or credentials as required for the position.

Essential Functions:

  1. Complete designated follow-up procedures for students referred for special education services.
  2. Develop, implement, monitor, and annually review the Individual Education Program (I.E.P.) of each eligible student on the caseload.
  3. Work with parents in all aspects of their child's educational program.
  4. Supervise paraprofessionals assigned to provide support to selected students in resource, self-contained and/or regular class settings.
  5. Compile, maintain and submit all required reports in a timely manner.
  6. Provide educational services according to the guidelines of the program and through the established delivery model for service.
  7. Assure that all due process procedural safeguards are afforded students and their parents.
  8. Use special methodology for instruction, according to the population needs.
  9. Implement assistive technology as indicated according to IEP.
  10. Effectively utilize available technology in the development of the IEP and related documents.
  11. Use carefully designed behavior management strategies, as indicated.
  12. Administer on an ongoing basis evaluations of student progress toward mastery of established goals and objectives, and report progress to parents.
  13. Serve as a resource to the regular education teachers who teach mainstreamed exceptional students.
  14. Perform special duties required for meeting the unique needs of specific populations including but not limited to lifting physically handicapped students.
  15. Possess and maintain valid and appropriate license, certificate and/or credentials as may be required for this position.
  16. Follow work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable, and punctual manner.
  17. Participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to assignment.
  18. Review current developments, literature and technical source information related to job responsibilities.
  19. Ensure confidentiality of student information.
  20. Ensure adherence to safety procedures.
  21. Follow federal and state laws, as well as Board policies.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned by Superintendent or designee.
