Job summary

Hudson Public Schools in Hudson, Massachusetts, seeks an Elementary Dual Language Teacher (Portuguese) to provide direct instruction in Portuguese to elementary students. The teacher will foster an inclusive environment, support social-emotional development, and align instruction with district goals.

The role requires DESE license for Foreign Language (Portuguese 1-6), BEE or TBE endorsement, and strong proficiency in Portuguese and English.

Qualifications

  • Portuguese proficiency of at least Advanced Mid.
  • English proficiency of at least Intermediate.
  • Experience with diverse learners in equitable and inclusive settings.
  • Experience evaluating student skills and writing progress reports.
  • Strong problem-solving and data-collection skills.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons per district/school objectives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication with parents, students, teachers, and community representatives.

ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE

To provide direct instruction in Portuguese to students at the elementary level in order to deliver Hudson Public Schools' high expectations for achievement and equal access to high levels of instruction. Creates an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and addresses the needs of all learners and supports the social/emotional development of the students.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for integrating knowledge of second language acquisition and evidenced based practices for effective Dual Language Program implementation.
  • Plans instruction which lends to the educational growth and development of students.
  • Responsible for using innovative approaches, and instructional strategies, including the effective use of technologies, to increase student learning and confidence to learn.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, celebrates cultural differences and is appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Responsible for effective management of classroom environment.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Responsible for mentoring students' understanding of the curriculum effectively and adjusting instruction, materials, or assessments, when appropriate.
  • Responsible for effective instruction, that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students, which includes making appropriate adjustments and modifications to consistently deliver the curriculum in the partner language, making learning goals clear to the students, using appropriate instructional and questioning techniques.
  • Responsible for identification, referral procedures, and accommodations for students requiring Special Education.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Responsible for the promotion of high standards and expectations for student achievement.
  • Collaborates with colleagues, students, and/or parents on a regular basis.
  • Responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.
  • Performance of other reasonably job-related tasks.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must hold the appropriate DESE issued license in field and grade level license for Foreign Language (Portuguese 1-6).
  • Must hold the Bilingual Education Endorsement (BEE) associated with the language of instruction, or possession of a valid Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) license, or Transitional Bilingual Learning endorsement associated with the language of instruction
  • Portuguese proficiency of at least Advanced Mid.
  • English proficiency of at least Intermediate.
  • Demonstrate experience working with students of diverse backgrounds with diverse needs in an equitable and inclusive manner.
  • Demonstrate experience evaluating student skills through writing reports that interpret/summarize findings.
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and data-collection skills to support student success.
  • Demonstrate ability to plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal skills for communicating with parents, students, teachers, administrators, and community representatives.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrate experience supporting students with special needs.
  • Advance educational preparation in the discipline.
  • Familiar with literacy development in Portuguese.
  • Teaching experience in the discipline.
  • Demonstrate experience with second language acquisition.
  • Ability to speak a third language, preferably Spanish.
  • Additional content area license (i.e. ESL, Special Needs)
EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Hudson School Committee's policy on evaluation or in accordance with union contract.

WORK YEAR
  • 10 months, 183 days
  • 3 personal days, 13 sick days prorated pursuant to date of hire
  • Benefit Eligible on start date. 30 days to enroll in coverage from start date.

While performing duties of this job, the employee may often remain in a stationary position for considerable periods of time. The employee will have also have ample periods of standing and may be required to traverse throughout the building. The employee must frequently use hands and frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e., calculator, copy machine, and computer printer). Physical abilities may also include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity/depth perception/color vision/field. Ability must be able to lift and/or push and pull 15 to 20lbs for short periods, and walk up and down stairs several times a day. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students, staff members, and the public in person and on the telephone.
