Job summary

YAI is seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to collaborate with classroom teachers, providing instructional and behavioral support for students with brain injuries or brain-based disabilities in a developmentally appropriate setting.

In this role you will deliver lessons, assist with planning, supervise paraprofessionals, and participate in IEP-related activities as needed, while maintaining a safe, organized classroom and communicating with families and staff.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree preferably in education-related field.
  • Current NYSED Level III Teaching Assistant certificate.
  • Satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience and training.
  • Strong interpersonal, problem solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and be highly flexible.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with classroom teacher in performance of teaching functions providing support to students and coteaching.
  • Provides instructional and behavioral management support to students.
  • Works with children in small and large group settings, as well as individually, under the supervision of the Director of Education.
  • Participates in lesson planning process, preparing and/or delivering lessons to students both individually and in small groups.
  • Provides classroom coverage as a substitute teacher as needed, overseeing and leading lessons for 6–8 students with brain injuries or brain-based disabilities in absence of classroom teacher.
  • Communicates with parents, staff and administration, as appropriate.
  • Provides direction, support and supervision to the paraprofessionals in the classroom.
  • Collaborates in the planning and implementation of a supportive and challenging developmentally appropriate program.
  • Collaborates with each student’s iHOPE therapy team as necessary and appropriate, implementing therapy recommendations in the classroom accordingly to support optimal treatment of the student.
  • Participates in setting up, cleaning and maintaining classroom equipment and supplies.
  • May participate in IEP meetings, when necessary and appropriate and/or provide information to classroom teacher and/or director regarding students as needed.
  • Performs all other duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

including education, experience, licensure/certification, etc. and essential physical capabilities (e.g. lifting, assisting lifting, standing, etc.)

  • Associate’s degree preferably in education-related field; or
  • Current certificate and registration as a Level III Teaching Assistant issued by the New York State Education Department; or
  • Satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training; and
  • Exhibits exceptional interpersonal, problem solving, and communication skills
  • Exhibits the ability to take initiative
  • Highly flexible personality type
Preferred Qualification Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field
  • Two (2) years of experience in an educational setting
  • Current enrollment in a New York State registered Master’s Program for Special Education Teacher’s Certificate (or equivalent)
Compensation

Compensation starts at $25 per hour
