Salary: $25,536 - $32,758

Position Title

2441 Special Education Teacher Assistant

General Definition and Conditions of Work

Performs responsible human support and paraprofessional work assisting classroom teachers by working with individual special needs students or small groups. Work is performed under the regular supervision of assigned teachers, therapists, or building administrators. This is light work requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds frequently, and a negligible amount constantly to move objects. It also includes some medium work requiring exertion of 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly. Work involves stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word. Hearing is necessary to receive detailed oral information and make fine sound distinctions. Visual acuity is needed for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, checking work accuracy, and observing surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and noise.

Essential Functions / Typical Tasks

  • Assist teachers or other professionals to achieve instructional objectives; help special population students with personal care and mobility; support daily instruction and activities.
  • Assist classroom teachers with specific duties or specialized tasks to enhance instructional goals.
  • Work with individuals or small groups to reinforce material introduced by the teacher.
  • Provide programmed practice activities and repetitions as developed by teachers, therapists, or pathologists.
  • Assist with large group activities.
  • Escort students to special classes and therapy sessions.
  • Guide independent study and other assignments given by teachers.
  • Report student issues to teachers and assist with behavior and classroom management.
  • Help students with mobility needs and assist with loading/unloading buses.
  • Support routines such as breakfast, lunch, snack, cleanup, lavatory, clothing, personal hygiene, and wash-up.
  • Provide classroom coverage and instructional support during teacher absences.
  • Participate in in-service training programs as assigned.
  • Perform related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Education and Experience

Successful completion of 48 college credits or passing the ParaProfessional Test, along with prior experience working with children.
