Job description

SUMMARY:

The Head Start Teacher Assistant reports to the Teacher and assists in providing services to children aged 3-5 years in the Head Start Program.

The Teacher Assistant is responsible for supporting the teacher with program planning and daily supervision of an assigned group of 17-20 children aged 3-5 years. Duties include performing developmentally appropriate activities related to the social, physical, intellectual, and emotional development of children. Work is performed under the guidance of the Teacher and reviewed through monitoring, conferences, and evaluations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Include the following:

  1. Assist the teacher in facilitating interactions among children to promote their educational, social, and emotional development by helping prepare lesson plans and design learning activities.
  2. Assist in the implementation of the curriculum.
  3. Observe children daily and record outcomes data on the Teaching Strategies Gold assessment system when needed.
  4. Supervise children in the classroom, playground, restrooms, and during all activities.
  5. Assist in observing and evaluating children’s cognitive, social, physical, and educational development.
  6. Support social and learning experiences during family-style meals and assist with meal cleanup. Maintain accurate attendance and meal records.
  7. Observe and record children’s behavior.
  8. Assist with individualizing support for children.
  9. Ensure children’s safety through safety checks and facility inspections (indoor and outdoor).
  10. Help select and design educational materials to enhance classroom learning and training.
  11. Prepare materials for learning centers and maintain teaching supplies and equipment.
  12. Participate in home visits to encourage parental involvement and inform parents about their child's educational needs and learning activities.
  13. Provide supervision of classroom activities in the absence of the teacher.
  14. Report suspected child abuse or neglect situations.
  15. Collaborate with parents and volunteers under the teacher’s guidance and assist in recruiting volunteers.
  16. Attend staff meetings, trainings, and conferences to stay updated on educational trends and improve skills.
  17. Serve as a bus monitor as needed, assisting with loading and unloading children.
  18. Collect in-kind contributions.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned.
