Teacher Assistant for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Job Summary

The Teaching Assistant for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides support for students and staff in the HILIA Program at Thomas Metcalf School.

This position is subject to academic break layoff, mid-May through mid-August.

  • Possession of a valid Paraprofessional Educator’s License with Stipulations Endorsement as required by the Illinois State Board of Education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Skill in signing and/or interpreting and ability to model appropriate use of language and speech when communicating.
  • Experience working with students with hearing loss.
  • Knowledge of listening, language, and speech development.
  • Experience working with equipment to facilitate hearing.
  • Willingness to be flexible with work assignments and schedule
  • Ability to transition quickly between classrooms throughout the building in a timely manner.
Work Hours

7:30am-3:30pm Monday through Friday

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform occasional lifting of 50-150 pounds.
  • Must have good reflexes.
  • Move about in various locations across campus as needed to complete day-to-day work.
  • Effectively communicate on a daily basis.

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
