General Statement of Job
Teacher Assistant: Under limited supervision, provides support to the teacher in instruction of students and performs tasks to support the teaching‑learning process. Reports to the teacher and/or principal.
Bus Driver: Under general supervision, drives bus safely, follows school district procedures, and monitors student behavior while riding.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teacher Assistant
- Academic Assistance: Gives group instruction as prescribed, provides individualized instruction, demonstrates instructional activities, monitors work, corrects in‑progress work, keeps students on task, praises achievements, reports progress.
- Instructional Preparation/Support: Serves as substitute teacher, arranges furnishings, prepares visual aids, duplicates materials, reorganizes at end of day, serves as proctor during testing, attends workshops, scores papers as instructed, distributes and collects materials.
- Reports and Records: Records student behavior, files data per regulations, assists with paperwork.
- Monitoring Student Behavior: Supervises students, distributes awards, promotes self‑esteem, teaches citizenship and social skills, reconciles minor conflicts, participates in discipline policy development, disciplines misbehavior, reports problems to teacher or principal, reports significant changes in behavior.
Bus Driver
- Drives bus safely to destination and return, conforms to traffic rules, performs vehicle pre‑checks, maintains cleanliness.
- Follows district procedures on assigned routes, picks up and drops off students at designated times, ensures students leave at all stops.
- Monitors student behavior on the bus, takes action to resolve incidents, reports inappropriate behavior.
- Assumes responsibility for safe transportation of students.
Minimum Training and Experience
- High School Diploma.
- Teacher Assistant: Minimum 48 hours of college coursework, GPA ≥ 2.0 or WorkKeys Certification (Business Writing). Two years of experience with children preferred. Effective oral and written communication with parents, schools, community, and district office. Willingness to undertake further training. Computer proficiency.
- Bus Driver: 5 years of responsible driving experience, completion of NC DMV Bus Driver Training Course, DOT Physical exam passed, DOT Drug Screen negative, eligible for Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger endorsement.
Additional Job Functions

Bus Driver
- Knowledge of driving laws and safe bus operations; vehicle pre‑run checks; record‑keeping of student lists and routes; administrative skills to enforce transportation policies; communication with students and parents; leadership in discipline; manual maintenance of cleanliness; mechanical detection of malfunctions; planning of seating arrangements; basic arithmetic for passenger counts.
