Position Title: Teacher Assistant – 190 Days (Bilingual - Spanish Preferred)

Reports To: Principal

SUMMARY: Assists the teacher in general daily classroom activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in small group pupil instruction; tutors pupils at teacher’s request.
  • Assists teacher in maintaining discipline and other functions.
  • Assists with set up of classroom and prepares materials for specialized instructional units.
  • Handles attendance reports and related clerical functions with the teacher.
  • Assists in assembling/hanging materials on bulletin boards and keeping displays current.
  • Operates standard school equipment such as laminator, copier, audiovisual, etc.
  • Assists in after school and academic assistance lab.
  • Encourages proper student behavior in accordance with school commitments.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises students.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED, a passing score on the WorkKeys Assessment Test, and completion of at least one of the following:

  • At least two years of study at an accredited institution of higher education; or
  • An associate's degree (or higher); or
  • An approved State or local academic assessment that measures the paraprofessional's knowledge of and ability to assist in instruction of relevant subjects (e.g., ParaPro).

Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions in practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions and deal with problems involving a few variables.

Other Skills and Abilities: Previous work in child care; ability to develop effective relationships with students and staff; clear communication skills; awareness of district requirements and policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Frequent sitting and talking/hearing; occasional standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds; vision abilities required include close, distance, and peripheral vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Usually loud noise level; responsibility for student safety and well-being; reasonable accommodations available for disabilities.
