Responsibilities
- Under supervision of a certified teacher, act as direct‑care personnel in the classroom and assist with self‑help activities such as toileting and changing diapers for students ages 3–21, including adolescents and adults; support academic, behavioral (physically restrain students with behavioral outbursts), social, vocational, and recreational activities designed for children and/or young adults; perform other related duties as required.
- Assist the classroom teacher in obtaining and preparing materials and equipment for teaching‑learning activities, including paper, arts and crafts, pictures, visual aids, and motion‑picture technology.
- Help prepare visual aids, update bulletin boards, and arrange displays of student work.
- Maintain a neat and orderly classroom, adjusting room lighting, heating, chairs, and desks as needed for different activities.
- Assist in keeping records of attendance, illness, and student performance and behavior.
Requirements
- High school diploma required; some college coursework preferred.
- Background working with a multiple‑disabled population.
- Ability to provide academic support, perform physical transfers for students in wheelchairs, assist with self‑help activities, physically restrain students with behavioral outbursts ("Handle with Care" training provided), and demonstrate patience while working with students.
- Receive direction from teachers and therapists; direct supervisor will be the assistant principal; additional supervision will come from the principal and Pupil Services Coordinator.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active New Jersey substitute certification or ability to obtain one.
- Valid driver’s license in New Jersey if vehicle operation is required.
