Job summary

Harrison County School District invites applications for a Teacher Assistant to support instructional goals and assist teachers in planning and implementing individualized training for students. Qualifications

  • All personnel shall pass a criminal background check and child abuse registry check.
  • A satisfactory employment record.

  • Comply with district policies and procedures.
  • Participate in daily and long-range lesson planning with the Certified Teacher (minimum 30 minutes per week).
  • Model reading, writing, and speaking skills for students.
  • Assist with learning exercises in basic language, reading, mathematics, and social skills.
  • Monitor student work and report misunderstandings for re-teaching.
  • Alert teachers to special needs of individual children.
  • Provide escort and assistance to students as needed (cafeteria, restroom, etc.).
  • Remain alert to hazards in the school environment.
  • Maintain individual records of students.
  • Collect and display suitable educational materials.
  • Assist teachers in coaching physical activities to strengthen large motor skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Principal or Certified Teacher.

Teacher Assistant

Qualifications
  • Must have completed at least 2 years of study forty-eight (48) semester hours, at an institution of higher education; or obtained an associate’s degree; or met a rigorous standard of quality as determined by a formal assessment, (Mississippi Test: ACT Work Keys – Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics and Writing Subtests).
  • In accordance with Mississippi Code S37-9-17, all personnel employed by the public-school system shall be required to pass a criminal background check and a current child abuse registry check.
  • A satisfactory employment record.
Reports To

Building Principal, Assistant Principal, Certified Teacher

Job Goal

The aide will support the educational and instructional goals of the teacher by assisting the teacher in planning and developing the individualized training program for the students.

Essential Functions
  • Participate in the district and school professional development programs.
  • Comply with all district policies and procedures.
  • Participate in daily and long-range lesson and classroom activity planning. This will include a minimum of thirty (30) minutes per week, of instructional planning with the Certified Teacher.
  • Model good reading, writing, and speaking skills for students.
  • Work directly with the students reinforcing skills taught by a certified teacher included but not limited to the following: conducting learning exercises with large and small groups of children in areas of basic language, reading, mathematics, and social skills. Guide children in working and playing harmoniously with other children.
  • Monitors written assignments as students’ work and reporting to certified teacher when misunderstanding of an assignment is detected for immediate re‑teaching/reinforcing purposes.
  • Alerts the certified teacher to special needs of individual children.
  • Provides escort and assistance to students’ as necessary including but not limited to the following: cafeteria, restroom, water fountain, and playground.
  • Remain alert at all times to hazards including, but not limited to the following: obstructed walkways, unsafe playground equipment, unauthorized personnel on school properties, unsafe floor surfaces, and any other unsafe conditions.
  • Assist certified teacher in maintaining individual records of students.
  • Collects and displays suitable material for educational displays.
  • Assist the certified teacher in coaching physical activities that strengthen large motor skills.
  • Any other duties within the scope of this job description as assigned by the Principal and/or Certified Teacher.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Terms of Employment

184 days annually with salary in accordance with the Administrative Salary Schedule as approved by the Harrison County School District.

Evaluation

Performance of the Teacher Assistant will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions in the School Board Policies and Procedures.
