Job Description
Student days only. 4 hours daily, 10 months, 9 or 10 months per year. Position open until filled.
Must have one of the following: an Associate degree, or 48 semester hours, or pass the WorkKeys assessment. Must be willing and eligible to obtain a bus driver's license and substitute as needed on the bus.

Position Purpose
The Teacher Assistant performs a variety of technical and clerical tasks in assisting a teacher. They may be requested to perform a wide range of tasks to support the lead teacher, meet student needs, provide a secure testing environment, and ensure quality instruction. Additionally, the Teacher Assistant offers one‑on‑one academic and behavioral support, may lead small group activities, and may assist in EC classes. General housekeeping and clerical duties are also performed as needed. All duties listed under “Essential Duties” are performed at the teacher’s direction.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma
- Associate Degree; or
- Minimum of 48 semester hours of college coursework; or
- Pass WorkKeys assessment
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 to 5 years serving as a classroom teacher assistant
- Training in assisting students with special needs
- Ability to obtain a North Carolina Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with school bus certification and P&S endorsements
Certification and License Requirements
- Valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist teacher(s) with executing instruction and evaluating its effectiveness
- Constantly monitor student safety and well‑being
- Monitor student attitudes and encourage self‑esteem
- Assist students with becoming increasingly independent
- Monitor student behavior and help maintain discipline in the classroom
- Record time out and in‑class suspensions
- Assist with crisis prevention; restrain students appropriately as trained, as needed
- Reinforce and clarify instructions as permitted
- Conduct short sessions on improving study skills
- Provide one‑on‑one assistance as needed
- Maintain standardized records and documentation of student progress
- Perform general housekeeping duties in the classroom
- Perform minor repair and maintenance tasks related to school equipment
- Perform various clerical duties as needed
- Maintain records of student progress as instructed by the teacher
- Develop and file incident reports
- Assist teacher with grading student papers and scoring tests
- Check daily attendance
- Develop classroom displays and instructional materials
- Maintain and operate audiovisual equipment
- Feed students, toilet students, and assist with other tasks students cannot perform
- Participate in staff development workshops and meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher and/or principal or principal’s designee
Working Conditions
- Physical Demands: Light physical work requiring up to 20 pounds of force; may involve lifting, holding, restraining, guiding, or leading by hand.
- Work Environment: Indoor and outdoor environments; direct contact with RCSS staff, students, and the public.
