Job summary

Erie 1 BOCES is seeking a Classroom Teacher Aide for a 6:1:3 classroom at Winchester Academy in West Seneca, NY. You will support the teacher and assist students with disabilities, focusing on safety, respect, and daily living activities.

Applicants should have a positive outlook, strong work ethic, and compassion. Training in TCIS Level 3 and ABA is preferred, with a commitment to inclusive education and teamwork.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent.
• Four years of experience in a related field or equivalent.
• Willing to obtain TCIS Level 3 certification and ABA training.
• Additional qualifications include teamwork and a positive outlook.

Responsibilities

• Assist with classroom activities as directed by the teacher.
• Work with individual children as directed by a teacher.
• Assist with arrival and departure routines (coats, boots, lunches).
• Keep supplies and materials organized.
• Prepare materials for student use.
• Assist in implementing behavior management programs.
• Accompany students when needed within the building.
• Assist in restraining students when necessary.
• Supervise games and free play indoors and outdoors.
• Assist with feeding, toileting, and daily living activities.
• Lift and transport students during daily living activities.
• For non-ambulatory students, may lift up to 40 pounds.
• Maintain confidentiality and follow teacher directions.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Four years of related field experience or equivalent

Willing to obtain TCIS Level 3 certification

This position requires working with students with disabilities under the direction of the classroom teacher. Applicants should have a positive outlook, a strong work ethic and be compassionate.

Job Description:

1. Assists with classroom activities as directed by the teacher.


2. Works with individual children as directed by a teacher.


3. Assists children with arrival and departure involving coats, boots, and lunches.


4. Helps keep supplies and materials in order.


5. Helps prepare materials for their use.


6. Cleans up and puts away materials after use.


7. Changes children's clothing and cleanses children, if necessary.


8. Assists the teacher in implementing the classroom and/or individual student's behavior management program.


9. Accompanies a child when removal from a classroom is necessary or when the child must go to another part of the building.


10. Assists in restraining students who may exhibit behaviors that are injurious to self or others.


11. Assists and supervises games and free play, both indoors and outdoors.


12. Assists the teacher in the implementation of activities that include but are not limited to: feeding, toileting, and other activities of daily living(e.g. grooming, hygiene, leisure/recreation, etc.).


13. Lifts and transports students in conjunction with daily living activities.


14. Teacher Aides working with non‑ambulatory students are expected to lift 40‑ pounds loads independently and may be required to lift/move students weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance from another adult and/or with the use of appropriate lifting devices.


15. Special Note: The ability to lift/move students either independently or with assistance is a condition of employment for teacher aides who work with non‑ambulatory students. Initial and periodic physical examinations will test this ability. Teacher aides should not attempt to lift more than one-third of their body weight without assistance from another adult or appropriate lifting devices.


16. Be an active part of the classroom education team, as demonstrated by following teacher directions, being cooperative, showing support for other team members and focusing on student needs and outcomes.


17. Discuss parental requests for information with the teacher before responding.


18. Maintains confidentiality of student information.

Minimum Civil Service Qualifications:

A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; or;

B) Four (4) years of experience and knowledge in a particular field where specialized duties are involved, not necessarily in an aide role; or;

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
