Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's degree and two years of relevant experience in corrections, community supervision, case management, rehabilitation services, or related field.

Substitution of Experience for Education: Full-time relevant experience in corrections, community supervision, case management, rehabilitation services, or related field may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis, up to a maximum of two years.

Substitution of Education for Experience: Two years of relevant graduate coursework in criminal justice, social work, psychology, or behavioral science may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.

OR

Two years as a TDOC Case Manager with the Tennessee Department of Correction.

Necessary Special Qualifications: A valid vehicle operator's license may be required for employment in some positions.

Overview

Under direction, an employee within this class performs professional case management work of considerable difficulty. An employee in this class leads other TDOC Case Managers and/or provides oversight of program(s) for offenders in correctional facilities. This class differs from TDOC Case Manager 2* in that incumbents perform at an advanced level with lead responsibilities and/or provides program oversight.

Responsibilities
  • Perform advanced, complex case management work of considerable difficulty, serves as a lead and/or provides oversight of program(s) and case management operations within correctional facilities.
  • Oversee complex case decisions and ensure consistent application of policies, procedures, and professional standards across case management operations.
  • Review and approve assessments, case actions, and case documentation to ensure quality, timeliness, and compliance with established requirements.
  • Complete inmate custody assessment form for inmates on assigned caseload.
  • Initiate and schedule the monthly teaming for the unit management team.
  • Direct and monitor offender case planning practices to support effective supervision strategies, rehabilitative outcomes, and reentry readiness across assigned units or programs.
  • Coordinate and evaluate service delivery, program participation, and rehabilitative interventions to ensure alignment with offender needs and operational priorities.
  • Identify operational risks, compliance concerns, and barriers to successful supervision and implements corrective strategies to support safety and effective outcomes.
  • Communicate and coordinate with leadership, courts, community partners, and other stakeholders regarding complex cases, program operations, and supervisory decisions.
  • Assist in training new case managers and provide guidance to less experienced staff to support effective case management operations.
  • Conduct PREA screenings.
  • Understand and communicate sentence credits, behavior credits, program credits and pre-trial credits.
  • Assist in the reentry process by ensuring that all reentry documentation has been received prior to release (SS card, birth certificate and/or Identification).
  • Build, maintain, and audit inmate files.
  • Prepare responses to inquiries about inmates on assigned caseload.
