Job summary

Houston ISD is seeking an Intervention Teacher to act as an in-house resource supporting staff with targeted instruction for students needing extra help in Math, Science, and Reading. This role serves within an elementary or secondary school and cannot be the primary teacher of record.

You will collaborate with classroom teachers and administrators, observe performance data, and adapt materials to meet diverse student needs while tracking progress over time.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in core content areas.
  • TEA Certification is required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with classroom instructors and administrators to identify students in need of intervention.
  • Observe classrooms to review achievement data and determine intervention needs.
  • Provide instructional intervention in Math, Science, Reading, or General studies using selected curriculum.
  • Adapt intervention materials to meet individual student needs.

  • Conduct follow-up with students after intervention ends.
  • Participate in training and advise intervention staff.

  • Prepare lessons with accommodations for individual differences and show prep evidence when requested.

Job description

The Intervention Teacher is responsible for working with staff as an "in-house" resource to provide education intervention and directed instruction for students with additional academic needs that are not addressed in the traditional classroom setting. Typically, intervention is required in core content areas of Math, Science and Reading. The Intervention Teacher works within an elementary or secondary school. The Intervention Teacher cannot be the primary teacher of record.

Responsibilities
  • Work with classroom instructors and other school administrators to develop methodology to identify students in need of directed intervention.
  • In conjunction with classroom teachers and school administration, visit classrooms to observe student performance and review and assess student achievement data to determine a student’s need for intervention.
  • Utilize selected curriculum to provide instructional intervention for qualifying students in Math, Science, Reading, or General studies.
  • Assist in adapting intervention materials to enhance student needs.
  • Compile intervention data gathered from instructional sessions and provide assessment of student’s growth over established time frames.
  • Organize and administer materials for intervention.
  • Conduct follow up with students to course progress after leaving intervention.
  • Participate in training and advising of intervention personnel.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual differences.
  • Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like to communicate these objectives to the students.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided, and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Strive to implement, by instruction and action, the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assess the accomplishments of the students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  • Diagnose the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis and seek the assistance of district specialists as required.
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect the students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct. Develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior. Maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Make provisions for being available to the students and to the parents for education-related purposes outside of the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department heads, evaluate their job performance
  • Maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and community members.

Qualifications
Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s Degree preferred.

Work Experience
  • A minimum of 3 years teaching experience teaching students in the core content area.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing intervention assistance to directed or at risk students.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and with teams to collect data.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted.
Type of Skill And/Or Required Licensing/Certification

Software Microsoft Office Certifications/Licensure TEA Certification is required. Equipment Office equipment (e.g., computer, copier)

Leadership Responsibilities

Level 1-No supervisory responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice, and training to staff.

Work Complexity/Independent Judgment

Work involves the application of moderately complex procedures and tasks that are quite varied. Independent judgment is often required to select and apply the most appropriate of available resources. Ongoing supervision is provided on an "as needed" basis.

Budget Authority

No budget development activity is required.

Problem Solving

Decisions are made on routine matters affecting few individuals and usually within the confines of the job's own department. Specific job activities and results are typically reviewed closely. There are limited requirements for developing new ideas or changes in methods, procedures, or services.

Impact of Decisions

Follow rules and procedures. Decisions can have minimal or no impact to HISD. Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction.

Communication/Interactions

Information sharing - gives and receives information such as options, technical direction, instructions, and reporting results. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor, and coworkers in own and other departments.

Customer Relationships

Follows through with customer inquiries, requests, and complaints. Forwards difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to appropriate level for resolution.

Working/Environmental Conditions

Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any hazardous or unpleasant elements. Ability to carry and/or lift less than 15 pounds.
