HJF is seeking a TBI Subject Matter Expert (SME) Physician to serve as the SME for TBI across the spectrum of severity to support the Clinical Affairs team. This role is expected to perform with minimal direction and oversight in the areas of expertise and responsibility as part of a high-tempo office environment that is responsive to needs of DHA and DOD leadership, TBI clinicians/providers, brain health educators, and cognitive monitoring programmatic issues.

This position will be in support of the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence (TBICoE) in Silver Spring, MD.The TBICoE is a branch of the Research Support Division in the Research and Engineering Directorate (R&E) of the Defense Health Agency (DHA). DHA is a Federal Program within the Department of Defense (DoD). TBICoE, known previously as the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC), has been congressionally mandated since 1992 and is currently a matrixed research, dissemination, and knowledge translation program, supporting warfighter brain health and readiness by advancing the traumatic brain injury state of the science and clinical standards.

TBICoE's mission to support the warfighter is executed through subject matter experts embedded across DHA facilities with expertise in TBI clinical research investigations, surveillance, clinical tool development and training, cognitive monitoring and assessment, and dissemination of TBI tools, products, and education/training materials to DoD medical personnel, service members, including Guard, Reserve, and operational medics/corpsmen, veterans with TBI, and families/caregivers of the warfighter.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


  • Serves as the TBICoE SME for mild, moderate, severe, and penetrating TBI including knowledge from prevention to rehabilitation and stays actively informed on emerging areas of brain health to include blast overpressure, high and low-level blast, cognitive monitoring and performance.
  • Reviews specialty SME quarterly reports and provides updates to leadership on emerging areas of clinical practice, brain health threats, and warfighter-relevant demand signals.
  • Provides expertise and analysis to TBICoE senior leadership on issues of TBI research, clinical care and standards of care for patients along the full continuum of TBI severity.
  • Collaborates with and receives direction from TBICoE leadership, DoD health care policy offices and other SMEs to assist in enhancing metrics for evaluation of and standardization of TBI services and programs.
  • May provide input for development of training platforms/tools. When appropriate, provides direct training.
  • Provides consultation to leadership in TBICoE, DoD and clinical programs regarding the evidence on TBI evaluation, treatment and management, identification of gaps in evidence, the current and future needs in the military and future research requirements.
  • Supports TBICoE researchers in their TBI research as an SME.
  • May directly collaborate in TBICoE/DoD research projects.
  • Attends and participates in scholarly, academic and scientific meetings related to TBI, brain health, blast, or cognitive monitoring.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Assigned Lead: May supervise junior colleagues.

Education and Experience
  • Medical Degree is required.
  • 5-10 years of experience in healthcare and/or healthcare research required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • SMEs are professional personnel who have published in peer review publications and/or presentations at professional meetings. Excellent oral and written communications required.
  • Must adhere to legal, professional and ethical codes with respect to confidentiality and privacy. Knowledge of TBI and statistics, required.
  • Knowledge of DoD and VA health care systems strongly preferred.
  • Must have strong collaborative and organizational skills.
  • Specialty training in related-TBI field (e.g., Neurology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurosurgery, Neuro-Optometrist, Cognitive neuroscience, or related field) strongly preferred.
  • May require US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance.
Physical Capabilities
  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
  • May encounter patients who are confused, agitated, or abusive.
Licenses and Certifications
  • MD with state license, Board certification preferred.
Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.
Compensation
  • The annual salary range for this position is $152,500-$181,900. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
