Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in biostatistics or epidemiology required; PhD with waiver considered.

  • Familiarity with TBI and prior DoD/VA system experience preferred; complete CITI/HIPAA training.

HJF is seeking a Senior Biostatistician who will evaluate and analyze TBI outcomes data and provide expertise in the development, analysis, interpretation, and management of outcomes data sources. This position requires expertise in biostatistics, analytic approaches to data management, and outcomes measurement.

This position will be in support of the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence (TBICoE) in Silver Spring, MD. TBICoE is a branch of the Research Support Division in the Research and Engineering Directorate (R&E) of the Defense Health Agency (DHA). DHA is a Federal Program within the Department of Defense (DoD). TBICoE, known previously as the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC), has been congressionally mandated since 1992 and is currently a matrixed research, dissemination, and knowledge translation program, supporting warfighter brain health and readiness by advancing the traumatic brain injury state of the science and clinical standards.

TBICoE's mission to support the warfighter is executed through subject matter experts embedded across DHA facilities with expertise in TBI clinical research investigations, surveillance, clinical tool development and training, cognitive monitoring and assessment, and dissemination of TBI tools, products, and education/training materials to DoD medical personnel, service members, including Guard, Reserve, and operational medics/corpsmen, veterans with TBI, and families/caregivers of the warfighter.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


  • Design, develop, and implement outcomes projects to contribute to knowledge about outcomes and health care delivery in traumatic brain injury, brain health, and cognitive monitoring.
  • Performs statistical analyses, power analyses, and technical/methodological consultations as needed to support internal and external TBI stakeholders and assisting in the preparation of any resulting proposals, protocols, manuscripts, posters, or presentations.
  • Disseminate outcome results with meaningful analysis through presentations to scientific and professional groups, publications in scientific and professional peer-reviewed journals, and additional communities of interest.
  • Translate findings from outcomes data and/or current research into meaningful conclusions and provide scientific and health policy leadership.
  • Tracks trends in analytics and develops novel means to display and disseminate results across a variety of audiences, including but not limited to peers in the scientific community, military leaders, health policy advocates, TBICoE and MHS leadership, the TBI Advisory Committee, and other clinical communities.
  • Provide service to the professional and scientific community through membership on scientific peer review groups and national policy and advisory boards.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries.
  • Provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Education and Experience
  • Doctoral degree in biostatistics, or epidemiology is required. A PhD in a related field with appropriate biostatistics experience may be considered, through a waiver process with input from the government.
  • A minimum of 7 years' experience in healthcare data analysis and research.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated experience developing and leading clinical or translational research.
  • Familiarity with TBI and prior experience with DoD/VA systems preferred. Must complete CITI/ HIPAA training.
  • Thorough knowledge of quantitative methods (from mathematics and statistics) for dealing with methodological and analytic problems.
  • Scientific writing skills; ability to write and communicate effectively to scientific/technical audiences as well as non-scientific/technical audiences.
  • Extensive knowledge of a standard statistical software library (e.g., SAS, STATA or SPSS) and database design.
  • Research methods and theory in health research related discipline; data analysis and interpretation skills.
  • May require US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance.
Physical Capabilities
  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.
Compensation
  • The annual salary range for this position is $105,800-$126,300. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
