The mission of the Bureau of Tuberculosis Control (BTBC) is to prevent the spread of tuberculosis (TB) and eliminate it as a public health problem in New York City. As the TB Hotline Coordinator (Junior Public Health Nurse), you will manage the Bureau of Tuberculosis Control's primary point of contact for inquiries related to tuberculosis. Leveraging your clinical knowledge and nursing background, you will provide essential support by answering calls from healthcare providers, hospitals, and the public, assessing their needs and providing accurate information.

This role requires excellent communication, sound judgment, and the ability to navigate a range of challenging clinical and logistical scenarios. You will be responsible for triaging calls, coordinating follow-up with internal teams (e.g., case management) and ensuring seamless care transitions, especially regarding hospital discharge for patients with TB. While prior TB-specific experience is not required, you will be expected to quickly develop a working knowledge of tuberculosis, infection control principles, and relevant regulatory guidelines. Your contributions to the hotline, along with your commitment to accurate documentation and efficient communication, will be crucial to facilitating timely access to care and supporting the BTBC's mission.

Duties Will Include But Not Be Limited To

  • Answer phone calls to the TB hotline in the Bureau of TB Control (BTBC).
  • Triage and escalate calls to appropriate BTBC staff as needed.
  • Respond to hospital discharge requests for infectious TB patients.
  • Work with BTBC case management staff to ensure appropriate discharge of TB patients from the hospital.
  • Accurately document all hotline interactions, including call details, information provided, and any follow-up actions taken. Assist in the collection of data related to hotline operations.

Preferred Skills

  • Required: Current New York State Nursing License.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Working knowledge of, or willingness to learn, infection control principles related to airborne isolation and tuberculosis.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for accurate documentation and record-keeping.
