Smith and Howard is seeking a Tax Supervisor for our Chattanooga Office. The role focuses on tax compliance, projections, responses to tax notices, and client relationship building.

You will interact with clients to understand their businesses and determine how we can assist them, while supervising staff and ensuring timely delivery of tax services.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance or other relevant degree program.
  • CPA license preferred.
  • Four to seven years of public accounting experience, preferred.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and basic accounting procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in handling routine audits, questions, and notices from federal or state agencies.
  • Frequent client contact, updating clients on progress and answers to questions.
  • Request information from clients/management to prepare tax returns and filings.
  • Act as a primary client contact on assigned clients.
  • Advise clients on tax implications and recommend alternatives.
  • Manage planning, administration and conclusion of client engagements.
  • Review tax returns and written tax advice; prepare advanced returns with complex specifics.
  • Prepare/supervise tax workpapers and stay current with tax law developments.
  • Supervise staff in return preparation and use of technology; assist with training.

Summary

In our Tax Supervisor role, you will communicate with our clients and get an understanding of their businesses and how we can help them be successful. This will include performing various aspects of tax compliance, projections, preparing responses to tax notices, assistance with special projects, and communicating with clients while building relationships.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in handling routine audits, questions, and notices from federal or state agencies.
  • Frequent client contact, especially with respect to updating clients on progress of outstanding items and answering basic questions.
  • Request appropriate information from clients and/or management to prepare tax returns and other filings.
  • Act as a primary client contact on assigned clients.
  • Assist clients by advising them of tax implications of their business objective and recommend alternate courses of action.
  • Successfully manage the planning, administration and conclusion of client engagements.
  • Perform primary review of tax returns and written tax advice, as appropriate.
  • Prepare advanced tax returns that involve special allocations, consolidated/related groups, multi-state considerations, and equity/ownership transactions.
  • Prepare/supervise preparation of tax workpapers.
  • Review tax law developments and determine which developments apply to clients.
  • Take supervisory responsibility for statutory due dates/tax control items and the due dates of other planning projects.
  • Serve as a resource for staff and promotes their understanding of tax technical issues.
  • Supervise junior staff in preparation of returns and use of technology as requested.
  • Assist with the preparation and delivery of in-house training.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance or other relevant degree program
  • CPA license preferred
  • Four to seven years of public accounting experience, preferred
  • Knowledge of basic accounting procedures and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
