Join a well-established, full-service accounting firm with over three decades of experience serving individuals and businesses across a wide range of financial and business needs. Its services span assurance, tax, and consulting, including financial statement audits, reviews, and compilations, tax planning and preparation, IRS audit representation, estate and trust services, and business advisory work. The firm has been recognized multiple times as a top accounting practice in its region, a reflection of its long-standing reputation for professional, personalized client service.
About the role:
We are hiring an experienced Tax Senior to join the team. In this role, you will prepare a varied portfolio of individual, business, trust, and nonprofit returns, research complex tax questions, and build lasting client relationships. You'll work directly with the firm's partners in a flat, team-first structure where colleagues help each other and work-life balance is a real priority. It is a great fit for a technically strong tax professional from a small or mid-size firm who enjoys variety and takes pride in getting the details right.
What You'll Do
- Prepare federal and state tax returns, with individual returns (1040) making up about half of the practice, alongside corporations (1120/1120-S), partnerships (1065), trusts (1041), nonprofits, and gift and estate returns (709/706).
- Research tax issues and document conclusions clearly for reviewers and clients.
- Manage multiple engagements at once, prioritizing deadlines and keeping work moving through tax season and extension periods.
- Communicate with clients, mainly by email and phone with occasional Zoom or in-office meetings, to gather information, clarify open items, and explain tax positions.
- Share your technical knowledge with teammates and, as you grow, serve as an onboarding buddy for newer staff.
- Take on work from all five partners, elevate complex matters, and support planning recommendations, with a manager or buddy providing regular check-ins.
- Assist with tax planning, projections, and estimated payment calculations.
- Maintain accurate workpapers and files in line with firm standards.
What You Bring
- 5+ years of experience in public accounting, focused on tax compliance, ideally at a small or mid-size firm.
- Hands-on experience across a mix of returns: strong individual (1040) work plus some business or trust returns, or strong business work plus some individual returns. Experience limited to only one return type is not a fit.
- Strong technical tax knowledge and solid research skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to handle a high volume of complex projects simultaneously, with strong project and time management skills.
- Extremely detail-oriented, with a commitment to accuracy.
- Proven ability to build and maintain client relationships.
- Flexible and adaptable, with a team-player mindset and a stable work history showing solid tenure at previous firms.
- Authorized to work in the U.S. (visa sponsorship is not available) and able to successfully pass a background check.
Nice to Have
- Active CPA license (preferred) or Enrolled Agent credential.
- Experience with estate (706) and gift (709) returns is a strong bonus; trust, fiduciary, and nonprofit experience is also a plus.
- Exposure to foreign tax filings and international reporting.
- Experience with IRS audit representation.
- Experience with Lacerte (the firm's tax software); familiarity with SurePrep, SmartVault, SafeSend, and Practice CS is a plus. All tools can be learned on the job.
