Job summary

Thoerner & Toma seeks a Tax Preparer with business and accounting focus to join our Honolulu office. This role targets a detail-oriented CPA or EA with 3–5 years of tax experience. You will build client relationships and deliver accurate tax work in a collaborative environment.

The position reports to the Tax Manager/Partner and includes growth opportunities, a strong benefits package, and a focus on quality client service.

Qualifications

• Experience with personal and business returns.
• 3-5 years of tax preparation experience.
• GAAP concepts understanding.
• Proficiency with tax software (Lacerte or similar).
• Strong analytical, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines during tax season.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review federal and state tax returns.
• Business returns (Forms 1065, 1120S, 1120).
• Individual returns (Forms 1040).
• Trust and estate returns (Forms 1041).
• Analyze financial statements, ledgers, and records for tax accuracy.
• Reconcile book-to-tax differences and identify planning opportunities.
• Collaborate with accounting and advisory teams year-round.
• Communicate with clients to gather information and explain positions.
• Ensure IRS compliance, deadlines, and firm quality standards.
• Assist with notices, extensions, and amended returns.
• Support tax planning, projections, and advisory work for business clients.
