Job description

Work Arrangement: Hybrid – approximately 3 days per week in office

Experience: 5+ Years

CPA or EA Required

A leading national CPA and advisory firm is looking for an experienced Tax Manager to join its growing Private Client Services practice in New York.

The position is focused on advising high-net-worth individuals, families, entrepreneurs and closely held businesses whose tax requirements often span multiple entities and generations.

You'll manage complex tax engagements, work directly with clients on year-round planning and lead teams of Seniors and Associates. The role provides considerably more exposure than simply reviewing compliance work, with the opportunity to become a trusted advisor to clients across both their personal and business interests.

The Client Base

You’ll work with successful individuals and families whose financial affairs can include:

  • Closely held and family-owned businesses.
  • Partnerships and other pass-through entities.
  • Corporations and S Corporations.
  • Trusts and estates.
  • Fiduciary structures.
  • Foundations.
  • Personal investments and other HNW interests.

The team takes an integrated approach, looking at the relationship between a client's businesses, personal wealth and family circumstances when developing tax strategies.

What You'll Be Doing

As Tax Manager, you'll take ownership of multiple client engagements throughout the year.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Manage Private Client tax engagements from planning through final delivery.
  • Review complex federal and state income tax returns.
  • Oversee compliance involving individuals, partnerships, corporations, trusts, estates and fiduciary entities.
  • Develop year-round tax planning strategies for HNW individuals and business owners.
  • Prepare and review interim tax projections and year-end planning.
  • Identify opportunities to improve clients' tax positions.
  • Research complex federal and state tax issues.
  • Interpret new tax legislation and determine how changes could affect clients.
  • Advise clients on the tax implications of business transactions.
  • Assist with IRS and state tax matters, correspondence and audits.
  • Manage engagement budgets, billing and collections.
  • Ensure engagements are appropriately staffed and delivered within agreed deadlines.
Client Relationships

You’ll have direct ownership of client relationships rather than operating solely behind the scenes.

You’ll work closely with business owners, individuals and families to understand what's happening across both their business and personal financial affairs.

As those circumstances change, you’ll be expected to recognise potential tax implications and bring planning ideas to the table.

The aim is to become someone clients contact before making a significant decision, rather than simply someone they speak to when a return needs filing.

Lead & Develop the Team

You’ll supervise Seniors, Associates and other members of the Private Client team across your engagements.

This will include:

  • Delegating work and managing engagement workflow.
  • Reviewing tax returns and supporting workpapers.
  • Providing technical guidance.
  • Training junior professionals.
  • Coaching Seniors as they take on greater client responsibility.
  • Providing regular feedback and supporting individual career development.
  • Maintaining high standards of client service and technical quality.

You’ll also have opportunities to contribute to internal training, client presentations, webinars and wider thought leadership.

What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of public accounting tax experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related discipline.
  • CPA or Enrolled Agent licence required.
  • Strong experience advising HNW individuals and/or closely held businesses.
  • Knowledge of individual and pass-through taxation.
  • Experience with partnerships, corporations, trusts, estates and fiduciary returns.
  • Strong federal and state tax research capabilities.
  • Experience managing multiple client engagements.
  • Previous supervision and development of tax professionals.
  • Excellent client-facing and communication skills.
  • Strong organisational and project management abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines during demanding periods.

Experience with CCH Axcess or comparable professional tax software would be beneficial.

Why Consider It?

This position provides the opportunity to develop beyond compliance and build a career advising individuals and families across the full range of their tax affairs.

You’ll have:

  • A dedicated Private Client Services platform.
  • Exposure to HNW individuals, families and business owners.
  • A varied mix of individual, partnership, corporate, trust and estate taxation.
  • Significant year-round tax planning work.
  • Direct ownership of client relationships.
  • Access to experienced Private Client Partners and senior leadership.
  • Responsibility for developing Seniors and Associates.
  • Hybrid working flexibility.
  • Comprehensive benefits and generous PTO.
  • Continued technical and leadership development.
  • Clear progression toward Senior Manager, Director and ultimately Partner-level opportunities.

For a Tax Manager who enjoys working with people as much as tax, and wants to become a long-term advisor to successful families and business owners, this offers an excellent next step.
