Job description

Firm Description

Red Bike Advisors is a 100% virtual tax, accounting, and advisory firm helping healthcare practice owners and scaling service businesses go from financially stressed to financially free. Founded in 2009 and based in Wilmington, North Carolina, we serve clients across the U.S. with proactive tax strategy & filing, accounting & advisory, tax resolution, and fraud & forensic investigations, all built around one idea: your business should fund your life, your freedom, and your future. We give owners the financial clarity, proactive tax strategy, and year-round partnership to stop surviving their business and start building real wealth from it.

Our team are A-players who execute on this vision every day and have a passion for delivering real value, not just compliance. Our culture is built on remote work, flexible schedules, KPI-driven accountability, and a genuine belief that tax strategy changes lives.

We are seeking a full- or part-time Tax Manager to join our growing team and help drive this mission forward. This role is for someone who is genuinely excited about tax strategy, not just tax compliance; who wants to teach their team to think beyond the return; and who measures their own success by the value they create for clients, not just what they file.

Team members who thrive here are "students of business." They understand our KPIs, care about throughput and efficiency, and take personal ownership of the client experience from planning through delivery.

Position Objective

The Tax Manager is responsible for the tax department's output quality, capacity, and strategic contribution to the firm. This means owning the full arc from client tax planning through return delivery, leading and coaching a team of tax preparers, and actively driving or delegating tax strategy conversations with clients.

Day to day, you will review tax returns for accuracy and alignment with client tax strategy and sign the tax return for filing; conduct or delegate complex tax research; hold team members accountable to turnaround and quality standards; and meet with clients on planning and strategy. You will know when a return is "done" and resist the pull to over-review, and you ship on time and on target.

This role is available full-time or structured as a job share between two part-time professionals. We especially love working with professional moms who want to work at a high level without going all in at 40 hours a week. If that’s you, let’s talk.

Areas of Responsibility
Tax Strategy and Client Advisory
  • Serve as the executive-level relationship owner for a multi-million dollar book of business, ensuring clients receive proactive, strategic, and timely tax counsel year-round.

  • Lead tax strategy conversations with clients, identifying planning opportunities beyond compliance.

  • Meet with key clients to review tax positions, adjust strategy, and document learnings into repeatable processes.

  • Prepare and/or review strategic tax plans for technical accuracy, long-term savings, and appropriateness for client goals.

  • Research and consult on complex tax matters; involve outside resources when appropriate and document the outcome.

  • Identify and surface additional service opportunities for clients; hand off to the appropriate team member.

Tax Deliverable Review and Quality
  • Review tax returns, projections, and strategic tax plans prepared by team members for technical accuracy, alignment with client tax strategy, and compliance with current law.

  • Review with a standard to catch real errors, not cosmetic ones; avoid unnecessary deep dives.

  • Reviews completed within 3 days of assignment.

  • Prepare complex tax returns as needed when no preparer is appropriately positioned.
  • Maintain accuracy and quality standards across all tax work product.
  • Collaborate with accounting, advisory, and dispute teams to deliver a connected, holistic service to shared clients.
Team Leadership and Coaching
  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of tax professionals toward both technical skill and efficiency.
  • Hold weekly accountability check-ins; track turnaround time, time under budget, and utilization by preparer.
  • Identify scope creep and hour overruns before they become client or billing problems; elevate to the Fulfillment Manager.
  • Train team members to offer real tax advice, not just prepare returns; build a team that thinks like advisors who create value for clients in the form of real tax savings.
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, and performance conversations for tax team members.
Operations and KPI Ownership
  • Own tax department's KPIs: capacity, utilization, turnaround time, time under budget, average hourly rate, and percent tax work complete.
  • Oversee the operationalization of technology, processes, and workflow tools for the tax team.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client tax records.
  • Participate in budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning with firm leadership.
  • Support firm-wide continuous improvement initiatives; bring ideas, not just problems.
Compliance and Continuing Education
  • Stay current on federal, state, and local tax law; apply new developments to client situations proactively.
  • Achieve required annual CPE credits; pursue additional learning relevant to firm clients and service lines.
  • Maintain confidentiality with all personal and sensitive client data.
Remote Work
  • Core hours that overlap with the team for collaboration and client availability.
  • Accessible via chat, phone, and video during core hours.
  • Company-provided laptop, dual monitors, and docking station.
You’re a Good Fit for Red Bike If:
  • You are a student of business. You understand KPIs, throughput, and why efficiency elevates the client experience in a professional services firm.
  • You are genuinely excited about tax strategy. Strategy and planning conversations energize you; compliance is the floor, not the ceiling.
  • You are a clear communicator. With clients, with your team, and with leadership. You translate tax concepts into plain language that business owners can understand.
  • You review to catch real errors. You do not redo workpapers in review or use review time to express stylistic preferences. You know what "done" looks like.
  • You coach, not just correct. When a preparer makes a mistake, your instinct is to teach the principle, not just fix the return.
  • You are efficient and you own it. You track your own time, respect budgets, and model the behavior you expect from your team.
  • You want a career at a firm that is building something. You are not looking for a place to quietly sign returns. You want to be part of building a tax department that clients brag about.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Licensed CPA or EA (required)
  • At least 6 years of tax and accounting experience in a public accounting firm
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing a team of tax professionals
  • Extensive knowledge of individual, corporate, and partnership taxation; trust experience a plus
  • Experience conducting or leading tax planning conversations with business clients, not just preparing returns
  • High proficiency with tax software, and productivity tools; comfortable learning new systems
  • Self-accountable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fully remote environment.
Benefits
  • Remote work: Great results and strong team culture, no daily commute required.
  • Flexible schedule: We are after exponential results, not green‑light on Slack from 8 to 5.
  • Flexible time off: Take time when you need it. We trust you to get your work done or get it covered.
  • Paid holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday, and the week between Christmas and New Year's Day.
  • Referral bonuses: A‑players know other A‑players. We bonus team members who bring great people in.
  • Continuing education: We cover required CPE hours and relevant state or national licenses.
  • Incentives: Competitive base salary plus incentives for new client referrals and for hitting firm benchmarks.
  • Benefits: Health, vision, and dental insurance options plus company‑paid life insurance.
  • Retirement: Company‑sponsored 401(k) with company match.
  • Technology: Company‑provided laptop, monitors, docking station, mouse, and keyboard.
