Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager to play a key leadership role in the execution and oversight of tax engagements across various client industries. This position is responsible for preparing and reviewing complex tax returns, managing client relationships, supporting staff development, and ensuring adherence to tax laws and professional standards. The Tax Manager will serve as a technical resource, mentor to team members, and contributor to the overall success and growth of the tax practice. This is a leadership-level opportunity for a tax professional who has strong public accounting experience and is interested in business development, client relationship growth, market development, and a potential future partnership track. The successful candidate should have a strong combination of technical expertise, leadership ability, client-facing skills, cultural fit, and an entrepreneurial mindset.

Key Responsibilities
Tax Execution
  • Possess advanced accounting and analytical skills to interpret and evaluate client financial information.
  • Prepare and review high-level individual and business tax returns with an emphasis on accuracy and advisory insights.
  • Ensure tax compliance by applying current federal, state, and local tax regulations.
  • Prepare and review tax planning estimates aimed at maximizing tax benefits.
  • Conduct tax research on complex matters to develop strategic solutions for clients.
  • Draft and submit written correspondence or respond via phone to the IRS and other tax authorities.
Client Interactions & Business Development
  • Communicate with clients through in-person meetings, phone calls, and virtual platforms.
  • Provide ongoing support related to tax and accounting matters.
  • Maintain and strengthen client relationships through proactive service and responsiveness.
  • Identify opportunities to expand services and add value for existing clients.
  • Be comfortable with and interested in business development and client relationship growth.
  • Help build and grow the Sioux Falls market, rather than simply maintaining an existing book of business.
  • Develop strong relationships with clients and contribute to the continued growth of the market.
  • Demonstrate a genuine interest in a future partnership track.
Documentation & Reporting
  • Prepare tax workpapers in compliance with firm and industry standards using appropriate software tools.
  • Generate accounting-related reports to support client engagements and firm operations.
  • Maintain organized and thorough documentation for use by preparers, reviewers, and clients.
Team Collaboration & Leadership
  • Coordinate with tax team members to ensure consistency and accuracy across all tax processes.
  • Support workload distribution by assisting with preparation, review, and oversight tasks.
  • Supervise and mentor tax staff and contribute to team development.
  • Provide clear and actionable guidance to clients and team members.
  • Follow policies and procedures to promote operational efficiency.
  • Foster inter-office collaboration and a positive, team-oriented work environment.
Professional Development
  • Participate in training and continuing professional education (CPE) to enhance technical and leadership skills.
  • Stay informed on current tax laws, accounting standards, and emerging industry trends.
  • Maintain compliance with annual CPE requirements and professional development goals.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
  • Master's degree in professional accountancy or taxation is preferred.
  • Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is mandatory.
  • 7-10 years of progressive experience in public accounting is required, with a primary focus on tax services and client advisory.
  • Strong public accounting experience at the manager level.
  • Proven experience preparing and reviewing complex tax returns for individuals, corporations, and partnerships.
  • Ability to research and resolve advanced tax issues at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Strong leadership skills with prior experience supervising and mentoring tax staff.
  • Strong technical and soft skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines, especially during peak tax seasons.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience with tax software platforms such as UltraTax and Thomson Reuters products is preferred.
  • Strong client service and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with clients, team members, and other stakeholders.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to contribute to business development and market growth.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism in all client and team interactions.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and be able to travel to firm offices and client sites as needed.
  • Ability to meet all annual Continuing Professional Education (CPE) requirements.
Work Environment
  • Onsite - Sioux Falls, SD
  • Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Extended hours during tax season, January through April 15
  • Occasional travel to other office locations or client sites may be required.
