Job summary

Corient seeks a seasoned Tax Services professional to advise high-net-worth individuals and families, including estates and trusts. You will design tax strategies, review returns, and stay current on federal, state, and international tax laws.

Collaborate with wealth advisors and finance teams to deliver compliant, proactive planning. Requires CPA/EA or bar license, 6+ years in public accounting, and oil & gas tax experience; primarily on-site in a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Accounting, JD, or MS in Tax required
  • Active CPA/EA or state bar license required
  • 6+ years in public accounting
  • Extensive Tax Advisory and Gift/Estate/Trust experience for HNW clients
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong client relationships
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with fiduciary tax returns (gift/estate)
  • Experience with CCH Axcess Tax & Bloomberg Income Tax Planner
  • Experience with research software and memo writing
  • Willing to work additional hours to meet client deliverables

Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality tax compliance for individuals, trusts, estates, gifts, foundations, and businesses
  • Develop tax planning strategies aligned with client goals and coordinate with advisors
  • Review and analyze returns for individuals, fiduciaries, gifts, estates, and entities
  • Handle federal and state tax notices and audits
  • Review estate planning documents and research tax laws; draft memorandums
  • Stay current on tax legislation and reforms
  • Experience with oil & gas tax specifics (depletion, IDC, AMT adjustments)
  • Develop tax savings strategies for clients in oil & gas
  • Manage client accounts and relationships with wealth advisors and planner teams
  • Serve as SME for clients’ advisory team and stakeholders
  • Conduct internal business development, public speaking, and article authorship
  • Provide internal training on tax topics
  • Manage team workload and training of group members

Essential Duties
Tax Services
  • Provide high quality individual, trust, estate, gift, foundation, and business tax compliance services as well as estate planning advisory services
  • Develop and implement tax planning strategies in alignment with client goals and objectives, including coordinating with advisors to integrate tax considerations into financial plans and investment strategies
  • Review individual, trust, estate, gift, business entity, and foundation returns
  • Handle Federal and State tax notices and audits
  • Review and analyze estate planning related legal documents
  • Research Federal, State and International tax laws, prepare tax memorandums on technical topics, and develop tax savings strategies
  • Be proactive and stay current on new tax legislation and tax reform
  • Experience in tax compliance specific to the oil & gas sector: Calculating depletion and depreciation, including cost and percentage methods
  • Experience with deductions unique to the oil & gas industry, such as dry hole costs and IDC
  • Calculating AMT adjustments specific to the oil & gas sector
Business Development
  • Manage all aspects of client accounts with respect to tax, fostering client relationships, overseeing processes, and answering questions
  • Serve as a subject matter expert, resource, and point of contact for clients’ broader advisory team, including wealth advisors, financial planners, and other stakeholders
  • Conduct internal business development and marketing, including networking, public speaking and authoring income tax planning and Trust and Estate related articles
  • Provide internal training and guidance on tax-related topics
  • Manage other members of the group including monitoring their workload and training and assisting them
Qualifications
  • BA/BS degree in Accounting from an accredited college/university, JD, or MS in Tax required
  • Active CPA, EA or state bar license required (eligible to be listed on POAs is required)
  • 6+ year’s progressive experience in public accounting required
  • Extensive experience in Tax Advisory and Gift/Estate/Trust planning and compliance for sophisticated high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong client relationships
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications required
  • Experience with reviewing individual, fiduciary, gift tax returns required, partnership and S corporation preferred
  • Preferred experience with CCH Axcess Tax & Bloomberg Income Tax Planner (Formerly BNA)
  • Experience with research software and memo writing required
  • Must be able and willing to work additional hours as needed to meet client deliverables

Pay Information

This position is exempt and is paid according to the laws of the State of California. The pay range for this position is $121,900-$172,500 USD per year. We are required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for this position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the physical capabilities to work in an office environment, which may include prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Corient seeks to make reasonable accommodations that enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential duties when possible. This position may require the ability to lift up to 15 pounds. This position is required to work onsite 4 days per week.
