Job description

We are a full-service Certified Public Accounting firm offering tax, audit, consulting, and business advisory services to clients in a wide variety of industries. The Tax Manager is responsible for leading and managing tax compliance, planning, and consulting engagements while ensuring exceptional client service and adherence to federal, state, and local tax regulations. This role serves as a key leader within the Tax Department, overseeing client relationships, engagement execution, staff development, and departmental performance.

The Tax Manager provides advanced technical guidance, ensures consistent quality standards, drives efficiency and profitability across engagements, and supports the firm’s mission of delivering solutions-based advisory services. This position requires a balance of strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and proactive client relationship management.

Position Reports To

The Tax Manager is a member of the Tax team and reports to the Tax Director and Partner.

Key Responsibilities
Client Service & Technical Expertise
  • Manage and review federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, trusts, and other entity types, including complex engagements.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of all tax engagements in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and firm standards.
  • Provide high-level tax planning, consulting, and advisory services tailored to client goals and business needs.
  • Identify and implement tax-saving strategies while mitigating risk and ensuring compliance.
  • Advise clients on tax implications related to mergers and acquisitions, entity structuring, restructuring, multi-state matters, succession planning, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Lead and review complex tax research, develop well-supported conclusions and actionable recommendations.
  • Serve as a technical resource for tax staff, providing guidance on complex issues and ensuring appropriate escalation when needed.
Engagement & Project Management
  • Oversee multiple tax engagements simultaneously, ensuring proper planning, staffing, execution, and delivery.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned clients, building long‑term relationships through proactive communication and responsiveness.
  • Monitor engagement budgets, realization, deadlines, and deliverables to ensure profitability and efficiency.
  • Ensure consistent documentation standards, workpaper quality, and adherence to firm templates and procedures.
  • Coordinate with Partners, Directors, and other departments to deliver integrated client solutions.
  • Proactively identify process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce rework during busy season and throughout the year.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop Tax Supervisors, Senior Accountants, Staff Accountants, and interns.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback through review notes, coaching, and performance discussions.
  • Assist with hiring decisions, onboarding, and training initiatives within the Tax Department.
  • Delegate work effectively while ensuring accountability, quality control, and appropriate workload balance across the team.
  • Promote a culture of excellence, professionalism, integrity, and continuous improvement aligned with firm values.
  • Support leadership in performance evaluations, compensation discussions, and development planning for team members.
Business Development & Firm Growth
  • Identify additional service opportunities for existing clients and communicate opportunities to Partners and Directors.
  • Participate in networking, referral development, and relationship building to support firm growth.
  • Assist in proposal development, client presentations, and onboarding of new clients.
  • Represent the firm professionally in the community and within professional organizations.
  • Support cross‑selling efforts across tax, attest, CAAS, and wealth management services.
Core Schedule
  • Monday – Friday; Saturdays during tax season at an agreed‑upon schedule between the Tax Manager and Tax Director or Partner.
  • Additional hours may be required during peak periods to meet client deadlines. Advance notice will be provided whenever possible.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA license required.
  • 7+ years of progressive tax experience within a public accounting firm.
  • Prior experience managing engagements and supervising the work of others required.
  • Demonstrated experience with tax compliance, planning, consulting, and client advisory services.

  • Serves as a technical leader within the department, ensuring consistent and accurate tax positions.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
