Distinct | North America is seeking a Tax Manager to join a small South Shore CPA firm as the second in command, offering genuine influence, a manageable busy season and the potential to work toward ownership.
The role is hybrid from Canton, MA. You will handle corporate tax for midsized clients with some individual returns, and you will both prepare and review work, including S Corps, C Corps and partnerships.
Maybe you like public accounting. You just do not particularly like what some firms expect you to sacrifice for it.
This Tax Manager role gives you something quite different.
You will join a small South Shore CPA firm as the second in command, with genuine influence, a manageable busy season and the option to work toward ownership if that is where you want your career to go.
And when they say family comes first, there is some evidence behind it. The average employee tenure is around 10 years, and the owner originally left the Big 4 because he wanted more time with his own young family.
That thinking still shapes how the firm operates today.
You will be trusted to manage your workload like an adult. Your opinion will matter. And if your kid has a soccer game, you are not expected to pretend a tax return is more important.
Even during tax season, hours max out at around 60 per week.
The work itself is primarily corporate tax for a range of midsized clients, with some individual returns mixed in. You will both prepare and review work, so experience with S Corps, C Corps and partnerships will be important.
You will work on a hybrid basis from Canton.
This could be particularly interesting if you are coming from a larger firm and want to keep doing good technical work without the same level of pressure.
Equally, if you are at a smaller or midsized firm and wondering where the next step is supposed to come from, this is a chance to move into a genuine number 2 position.
There is also a potential route to ownership. If becoming an owner appeals to you, that conversation can become very real here. If it does not, nobody is going to push you toward it.
You will also get health insurance, a SIMPLE IRA, 3 weeks of vacation and firmwide time off following tax season and the extension deadline.
A CPA would be ideal, but it is not a dealbreaker.
Perhaps the best indication of the culture is how the firm handles difficult clients. If someone consistently treats the team badly, keeping the fee is not automatically the priority. Protecting the staff is.
That probably tells you more than a paragraph about “great culture” ever could.
