The Department of Taxes' Compliance Division seeks a talented individual who wants to support public programs through the accurate and equitable collection of Vermont taxes. This position will be involved with the review of taxpayer records for compliance and provide education to taxpayers.

This is a home-based position. A successful applicant will be eligible for an office allowance and will be reimbursed for allowable business travel expenses. The applicant will need to have reliable personal transportation to attend periodic meetings in the Montpelier main office and to conduct on-site audits, generally located in Orleans, Caledonia, and Essex Vermont Counties. Applicants are required to reside in or within reasonable proximity of Orleans County or Central to Northern Caledonia County. The hourly salary rate for this position ranges from $28.16 to $44.04, and State of Vermont benefits are very competitive. The annualized salary for this position ranges from approximately $58,572.80 to $91,603.20. The salary range reflects the minimum and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade, and the annualized salary figure is calculated based on 2080 hours of annual compensation and does not include authorized overtime or other compensation. It also doesn't include any time taken off payroll. The starting salary for this position may be negotiable depending on experience and qualifications.

Duties are performed independently from home office setting or from a central office location, commonly requiring extensive time in the field at the taxpayer's location. Significant travel may be necessary and incumbents must have a reliable means of transportation. Some audit situations may assume a somewhat adversarial nature, requiring significant tact and persistence to complete a successful audit. Pressure from work deadlines is predictable.
Bachelor's degree or higher including coursework in accounting, auditing or business administration and one (1) year or more of experience at a professional level in tax examination, accounting, auditing, or business administration.
OR
Three (3) years or more of experience in tax examination, accounting, auditing or business administration.
OR
CPA AND two (2) years or more of experience at a professional level in tax examination, accounting, auditing, or business administration.
OR
Two (2) years or more of experience as a Tax Field Auditor II or Tax Examiner III or IV.
