Director of Tax Strategy | HNW/UHNW | Wealth Management
Schedule:
Hybrid, approximately 50% in office per month
I'm partnering with a $4B+ AUM wealth management firm in the San Francisco Bay Area on an exciting search for a Director of Tax Strategy.
This is not your traditional Tax Director opportunity.
The firm is looking to hire its first dedicated senior tax professional to help build and lead its tax strategy offering for HNW/UHNW individuals, families, entrepreneurs, and technology executives.
This position combines sophisticated tax planning, direct client interaction, and the opportunity to build a tax function from the ground up within an established and growing wealth
Why this opportunity stands out:
- Build something from the ground up: Help develop the firm's tax strategy and compliance capabilities, including processes, technology, outside partnerships, and eventually the internal tax team.
- Sophisticated client base: Work with HNW/UHNW clients, including technology executives and entrepreneurs with net worths ranging from approximately $5M to $25M+, with some clients in the $100M+ range.
- Strategic tax planning: Advise clients on complex tax matters surrounding equity compensation, concentrated stock positions, liquidity events, multistate planning, charitable strategies, trusts, and wealth preservation.
- Highly client-facing: Partner directly with Financial Advisors to identify tax planning opportunities and provide creative solutions to complex client situations.
- Shape the future of the tax offering: This is a true build role with the opportunity to have a meaningful impact on how tax services are delivered as the firm continues to grow.
- Better work-life balance: Typical hours are approximately 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, without the traditional public accounting busy season.
- Hybrid flexibility: Approximately 50% in-office per month after the initial onboarding period, allowing flexibility around how those days are structured.
Ideal Background:
- 8+ years of HNW/UHNW individual tax experience
- Strong background in Private Client Services, Family Office, Wealth Management, or a similar environment
- Experience with sophisticated individual tax planning and compliance
- Strong knowledge of equity compensation, concentrated stock positions, trusts, charitable planning, and multistate taxation
- Comfortable working directly with HNW/UHNW clients and Financial Advisors
- Ability to translate complex tax concepts into clear, actionable strategies
- Experience helping build or oversee a tax compliance function is highly valuable
Compensation:
- 25%-35% performance-based bonus
- Additional upside tied to new business opportunities
This could be an excellent opportunity for someone coming from Private Client Tax, Family Office, or Wealth Management who enjoys the technical side of tax but wants to move beyond traditional compliance and become more strategic, more client-facing, and more involved in building something from the ground up.
