Job summary

Clark Schaefer Hackett is seeking a Tax Controversy Manager / Senior Manager to lead complex federal, state, and local tax examinations and disputes.

You will advise clients, develop strategies, and interact with taxing authorities while mentoring staff in a growing Tax Controversy practice.

This hybrid role in Kentucky offers collaborative colleagues, meaningful impact, and opportunities to expand services across the firm. Strong communication, research, and leadership skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Background in public accounting, tax law, IRS or state authorities (or related) is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of federal, state and local tax matters.
• Experience handling examinations, disputes, appeals, or related controversy matters.
• Excellent communication and client-relations skills are essential.

As a Tax Controversy Manager / Senior Manager, you’ll serve as a trusted advisor to clients and colleagues navigating complex tax matters. You’ll help develop strategies, resolve disputes, interact with taxing authorities, and provide guidance when the stakes are high.

Whether your experience comes from public accounting, tax law, the IRS, a state taxing authority, corporate tax, or specialized tax consulting, this is an opportunity to bring your expertise to a growing specialty practice where your judgment, insights, and relationships will make a difference.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage federal, state, and local tax examinations and controversy matters.
• Navigate administrative appeals and dispute resolution.
• Respond to tax notices and information requests.
• Assist with penalty abatement and collection matters.
• Conduct tax research and develop controversy strategies.
• Advocate for and represent clients before taxing authorities.
• Consult with partners and engagement teams on complex tax matters.
• Build strong client relationships and identify opportunities for additional services.
• Depending on experience, mentor staff, develop processes, and support the continued growth of the Tax Controversy practice.

Qualifications:

• Experienced tax professional with a background in public accounting, tax law, the IRS, state taxing authorities, corporate tax, or specialized tax consulting.
• Strong technical knowledge of federal, state, and/or local tax matters.
• Experience navigating complex tax examinations, disputes, appeals, or related controversy matters.
• Excellent communication and client relationship skills.
• Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
• Sound professional judgment and the ability to serve as a trusted advisor to clients and colleagues.
• Leadership or mentoring experience preferred for Senior Manager-level candidates.
