Job summary

Avalara is seeking a Tax & Compliance Manager, VCS, to lead a team delivering premium sales tax risk assessments, VDAs, and historical compliance engagements for Avalara customers across jurisdictions. You will drive automation, coach talent, and ensure high standards of quality and on-time delivery.

You will work closely with project managers, data consultants, and tax professionals, embedding AI-enabled workflows while maintaining strong client relationships and operational excellence.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years in sales and use tax consulting or compliance, including team leadership.
• Proficiency with Excel and data transformation; can tell a data story.
• Experience using Salesforce or similar CRM to track pipelines and reporting.
• Track record of applying AI tools to improve speed, accuracy, or scalability.

Responsibilities

• Coach and develop a Tax Associates team delivering sales tax risk assessments, VDAs, and historical filings across multiple states.
• Set expectations and ensure client response standards, including a 48-hour turnaround and on-time returns.
• Lead hiring, onboarding, and training for new team members; develop potential for growth within VCS.
• Escalation point for complex client issues or cross-functional questions.
• Partner with Practice Director on capacity planning, reporting, and billing oversight.
• Document and standardize team workflows to ensure repeatable quality and consistent customer experience.
• Identify, pilot, and scale automation and AI tools to improve productivity and quality.
• Use AI to synthesize performance data and spot workload patterns.
