Tax Collections Specialist - Beaufort County Tax Collector's Office

Description of Work: Provides customer service by telephone and in person; answers inquiries about tax bills, property records, property valuations, procedures and requirements or refers to others as necessary; provides tax certifications to attorneys, lending institutions, and taxpayers. Processes incoming mail; sorts, distributes, and keys in amounts; prepares outgoing mail, posts, and maintains records of postage due. Provides assistance to taxpayers, attorneys, real estate professionals, and the general public in researching records and providing general information on tax laws and policies. Checks deed requests for proof of payment and stamps for deed approval. Sends out letters explaining various office actions. Enters returned mail into the database. Ensures the security of the cash drawer; balances and counts the drawer for daily closeout. Performs clerical duties including opening, sorting, and distributing mail; assists coworkers with research and correspondence regarding delinquent collection methods; verifies employment and bank accounts; posts delinquent payments. Assists in other sections of the Tax Office. Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures. Knowledge of office technology and ability to learn specialized tax software applications. Ability to learn North Carolina Machinery Act, County tax policies, and procedures concerning listing, assessment, billing, and collection. Skill in customer service, teamwork, and conflict resolution. Ability to compute figures rapidly and accurately. Ability to read tax maps. Tactfully and courteously handle the public, explaining laws, policies, and procedures, and managing difficult customers. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and county officials. Operate calculators, computers, and other equipment with speed, accuracy, and skill. Ability to work with figures accurately and efficiently. Physical ability to perform sedentary work involving stooping, reaching, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions. Visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer terminal, and read extensively at close distances.

Qualifications: Graduation from high school and customer service and office technology experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
