Job description

Performs tax cashiering functions for the collection and recording of property taxes, utility and miscellaneous payments, and issuing permits. Assists taxpayers, mortgage companies, and tax paying service companies with researching tax questions, and researching records.

  • Assists customers with tax payments, permits, and other tax-related matters.
  • Conducts detailed research on property tax information for taxpayer problems, court cases, condemnation suits and other research projects; communicates findings to taxpayers and/or prepares reports for department administration.
  • Maintains files and documents containing taxpayer information; receives, records and accounts for payment transactions relative to property tax receipts from individual taxpayers, mortgage companies, and miscellaneous payments received from other County departments.
  • Monitors and verifies source documents in processing tax and miscellaneous payments; responds to tax roll and tax related questions from other County employees or the public both verbally and in writing; processes deposits for County departments; and calculates interest and penalty charges on delinquent accounts.
  • Reviews and verifies entries and information on data processing printouts; performs clerical and scanning tasks in support of the department as required; provides support for the various customer service functions within the Treasurer’s Office as directed.
  • Acts as liaison with volunteer groups and taxpayers in specialty areas as directed by the Treasurer; collects fees and maintains tax receipts for building permits, clerk fees, probate and sheriff fees for property taxes.
  • Balances batches and reconciles cash and checks received; mails out tax bills, collects tax payments and issues receipts; copies and files tax documents.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; to operate standard office equipment; and to interact effectively and professionally with the public, supervisors and co-workers.
  • Skilled in operating various word-processing, spreadsheet, database and other software programs in a Windows environment.
  • Skilled in providing effective customer service.
  • Knowledge of general office procedures and cashiering functions.
  • Ability to learn and use the New Mexico Property Tax Code; to use automated and manual information and retrieval systems; and to perform property deed and title research.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office setting. Work schedule may include overtime hours in the evening and on weekends. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. Clarity of vision at short distance is required. May be required to lift up to 20 pounds. Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, airborne particles, or allergens; and to hostile, violent or offensive individuals. May be subjected to exposure from CRTs and VDTs.

Conditions of Employment:

Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Driver’s License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties.
