The Tax Associate is part of a team‑of‑experts' model, working alongside back‑office preparers and quality review to deliver Full-Service Tax Preparation and Assisted Tax Support to Client TurboTax customers. In this model, the Tax Associate is the front‑office face of the engagement — the person hired for advisory and relationship skills first, not prep volume. While strong tax knowledge is essential, this role is fundamentally a customer‑service and review role: guiding, supporting, and reassuring customers, and validating the accuracy of returns prepared by the back office before they go out the door.
This role is ideal for professionals who excel in fast‑paced, technology‑enabled environments, who take pride in a shared team outcome, and who are comfortable reviewing and signing work they did not personally prepare.
About the Proficiency Levels
These posting covers four proficiency levels of the Tax Associate role. The duties, qualifications, and benefits below are the same at every level. Your level and hourly pay rate are based on the tax topics you can demonstrate competency in and the skills tests you pass, and each level builds on the one before it. See the Proficiency Levels section for the pay rate and requirements at each level.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary point of contact across the engagement, including the welcome call, proactive outreach when a customer goes quiet, the client review call, and delivering the final outcome to the customer.
- Conduct signer review of returns prepared by the back office: validating accuracy and compliance, catching anything that may have been missed, and being willing to sign and file work you did not personally prepare.
- Produce clear, structured "Notes to Preparer" documentation — written handoffs that another expert must be able to act on directly. Precision in writing is as important as tax knowledge in this role.
- Communicate with customers through Client’s video, audio, and digital tools, translating the tax outcome into something the customer understands, in a professional, friendly, and confident manner.
- Assist customers with product and software inquiries, ensuring they understand how to navigate TurboTax tools effectively.
- Create high‑quality customer interactions that build confidence through empathy, professionalism, and deep tax expertise.
- Utilize government resources, professional tax tools, and internal team knowledge to research and provide accurate answers in plain, customer‑friendly language.
- Support and champion the success of every role in the chain — front office, back office, and quality review — recognizing that every return is a shared team outcome, not a solo work product.
- Apply established procedures, policies, and best practices to troubleshoot and resolve tax‑related questions.
- Document all customer interactions thoroughly and accurately in accordance with company standards.
- Work consistently toward meeting or exceeding company KPI metrics, including quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
