Job description
Tax Accounting Manager

Our client, a boutique accounting firm, is looking for a Tax Accounting Manager to support their team during a time of company growth.

Location: San Rafael, CA. The team works 4 days a week in the office.

Job Description:

This is a hybrid tax and business management opportunity where the individual will spend their time on tax-related work, including reviewing and preparing tax returns, year-end tax planning, and responding to IRS inquiries for a variety of entities—individuals, S corporations, C corporations, LLCs, and partnerships. The remaining time will be dedicated to managing day-to-day financial operations such as cash flow reporting, tour accounting, royalty analysis, payroll, and profit allocations.

The ideal candidate will have a blend of tax and family office or general ledger accounting experience from a professional services environment, however the team is very open to training someone from strictly a tax background.

This person will oversee all aspects of client engagements, so effective communication skills are important. This role also requires true player-coach—someone who can both review the work of Staff Accountants on their engagement and be hands-on in preparing tax returns and other client deliverables.

The long-term goal is for this individual to grow into a partner role so there is significant opportunity for advancement and client development. Each of the partners is a CPA, so a CPA license or actively working towards licensure is required.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all aspects of client engagements, including the ability to interact and effectively manage communication with clients (written, verbal, and in person)
  • Oversee all aspects of business management engagements, including cash receipts and disbursements, cash flow reporting and cash planning, tour accounting including budgets, tour reporting, royalty accounting and analysis, payroll, management and other commission calculations, insurance, band profit splits, estate planning
  • Review and prepare individual, corporate, partnership tax returns, (with a limited number of trust and non-profit returns).
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve issues (tax and financial), perform research, demonstrate critical thinking necessary to implement advice and planning
  • Review and respond to IRS and state & local tax notices, audits
  • Perform and supervise accounting write-up/prepared financial statements
  • Comprehensive year-end tax planning
  • Manage multiple priorities, clients, and deadlines
  • Supervise, train, and review work of other team members
Qualifications:
  • Current CPA license (or pursuing)
  • Strong grasp of accounting, general ledger, and financial statement concepts
  • Current CPA firm experience, ideally with a business management or family office type firm. 5-10 years recent experience preferred.
  • In depth knowledge and experience with tax return concepts for Individuals, S Corporations, C Corporations, LLC’s, Partnership’s
  • Experience with tax audits and reviewing and responding to notices
  • Strong software skills, including proficiency in Excel, CCH ProSystem (preferred) or Axcess
Compensation:

Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco by Highspring depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to:

  • The individual’s skill sets, experience and training;
  • Licensure and certification requirements;
  • Office location and other geographic considerations;
