Qualifications

Tax Accountant
Position Highlights

This position on the Tax Services team within the Finance & Budget division performs a variety of tax-related accounting assignments in support of the University's tax compliance and reporting functions. The position applies foundational knowledge of accounting and tax principles, University policies, and established procedures. Responsibilities include assisting with tax research, tax determinations, customer service, tax and informational reporting, and communicating tax guidance and legislative updates.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists senior tax staff with the analysis, documentation, and reporting of state and local sales and use tax and other tax matters as they arise.
  • Assists senior tax staff with the preparation, documentation, and reporting of federal tax matters, including unrelated business income tax, independent contractor classification, payments to nonresident aliens, fringe benefits, and other tax matters as they arise.
  • Assists with researching state and federal tax publications, laws, regulations, and other authoritative guidance and documenting University tax positions and interpretations.
  • Provides customer service and guidance to campus departments regarding routine tax-related questions. Maintains and updates materials and resources on the Finance & Budget - Tax Services webpage.
  • Assists with annual University informational reporting requirements. Supports research, data gathering, and documentation related to multistate and international tax laws, reporting requirements, and compliance activities.

  • Ability to research, review, and summarize tax laws, regulations, and authoritative guidance with direction from senior staff.

  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure, meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced work environment where job duties change, and new procedures are initiated.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related area with accounting course work; OR, four years of progressively responsible and varied accounting experience and course work, which includes at least one year of professional accounting, in which a broad exposure to all areas of accounting and accounting principles, practices and procedures was acquired.
  • Professional accounting and/or tax experience.
  • Experience with the University's enterprise systems (UAccess Financials, UAccess Employee and UAccess Analytics).
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including nested formulas, pivot tables, and managing data across linked worksheets and workbooks.
  • Experience with reviewing transactions for compliance with policies.
  • Experience in a governmental or public higher education environment.

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University's campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims. As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
