General Job Responsibilities

The Tankerman is responsible for the safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally compliant operation of assigned area. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing barges for safe loading and discharging of oil, refined, and petrochemical products.
  • Ensuring all federal and state required documents are on board and in order.
  • Communicating with dock personnel about the transfer process and safety measures.
  • Participating in maintenance and training of new employees.
  • Handling lines and rigging during tow building, locking, and docking.
  • Working a rotating 6-hour on/off watch schedule, with occasional extended hours.
  • Adhering to safety gear requirements, including respirators and protective clothing.
  • Driving to and from hub cities as needed.
  • Performing duties necessary for navigating locks.
  • Complying with company policies, Coast Guard, and environmental regulations.
Employee Must
Education and License Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Merchant Mariner's Document with Tankerman endorsement for Grade B liquid cargos and a driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass certification requirements for handling benzene (46 CFR Part 197 Subpart C).

Work rotations are 14/7 for Bunker Tankerman and 20/10 for Line Haul Tankerman.
