Job summary

Blessey Marine Services, Inc. seeks a Tankerman responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operation of assigned barges and vessels. The role includes preparing barges for loading/discharging and ensuring regulatory documentation is complete.

Candidate must hold a Tankerman endorsement (Grade B liquids) and meet physical safety requirements, including PPE and emergency readiness. This position requires rotation shifts and travel between hub cities as needed.

Qualifications

  • Possesses a valid Merchant Mariners Document with a Tankerman endorsement for Grade B liquid cargos.
  • Be able to pass certification requirements of 46 CFR Part 197 Subpart C – Benzene.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare barges assigned to the vessel for safe loading and discharging of oil, refined, and petrochemical cargos.
  • Ensure all required federal/state documents accompany barges and are in proper order.
  • Communicate with dock personnel about product type and transfer procedures.
  • Maintain vessel and barges and assist in training new personnel joining as Tankerman.
  • Perform tow building, locking, docking activities and manage lines and rigging.
  • Work in a rotation schedule (6 on, 6 off) and occasional overtime up to 15 hours in 24 hours.

SUMMARYDESCRIPTION:

Responsible for the safe, efficient, reliable,and environmentally compliant operation of assigned area by performing thefollowing duties:

ESSENTIALJOB FUNCTIONS:

Theprimary function on the Tankerman is to prepare the barges that are assigned tohis boat for safe and complete loading and discharging of oil, refined, andpetrochemical barges. Other key job responsibilities include, but are notlimited to, the following:

  • Ensure that anyand all federal and state required documents that must accompany thebarges are on board and in proper order.
  • Communicate withdock personnel and ensure that each person participating in the transferof the product understands what the product is and how it should betransferred and protected.
  • Participate in themaintenance of the boat and barges, and help with the training of newlyhired employees aspiring to become Tankerman.
  • Handle lines andrigging during tow building, locking, and docking activities.
  • Must be able towork in a rotation watch schedule, involving 6 hours on and 6 hours off,and be able to occasionally work additional hours not to exceed 15 hoursin any 24-hour period or more than 42 hours in a 72-hour period, except inan emergency or drill.
  • Must be able towork on the boat with a schedule based on a ratio of 2 to 1 (i.e. 20 dayson, 10 days off or 28 days on, 14 days off).
  • Must be able towear a negative or positive respirator, PVC foul weather gear, rubbergloves and boots to protect himself from harmful cargo contact.
  • Must be able towear a 5-minute escape pack, or a negative pressure respirator, or asupplied airline respirator.
  • Must be able todrive to and from hub cities.
  • Must be able toperform all duties necessary to navigate locks.
  • Must be able toadhere to all company policies, United States Coast Guard andenvironmental regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and LicenseRequirements
  • Possessa valid, current Merchant Mariners Document with a Tankerman endorsementfor Grade B liquid cargos and under (46 CFR 12.20 et seq.) and a currentand valid driver’s license. TheTankerman endorsement applies to vessel’s Tankerman exclusively engaged inpetroleum or chemical transportation.
  • Beable to pass certification requirements of 46 CFR Part 197 Subpart C –Benzene. This applies to vesselTankerman exclusively engaged in petroleum and/ or chemical transportation.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
Learning and TrainingRequirements
  • Assist in training new personnel
  • Comprehend essential informationrelated to:
  • Spillcontainment and cleanup
  • MSDSsheets and emergency action information
  • Safetymeetings.
Safety and RescueRequirements
  • Ensure safe working conditions andorderliness of the vessel. .
  • Maintainsafe, sanitary living and working conditions.
  • Followall company safety rules and environmental regulations.
  • Wearsafety equipment as required, including:gloves, steel toes boots, goggles, rubber boots, slicker suits,respirator, five (5) minute escape pack or negative pressure respirator orsupplied airline respirator.
  • Assistin safety and rescue operations in emergency situations.
  • Assistin emergency firefighting, use firefighting equipment and spill containmentequipment.
  • Enterand exit hatches/ doorways quickly in case of emergencies.
  • Physicallypull or assist in pulling a 200-300lb man from the water.
Minimum JobQualifications:
  • Toleratelong hours during transfers.
  • Communicatewith co-workers, Captains, Pilots, Wheelman, Dispatchers, Port Engineers, CoastGuard Inspectors, and others.
  • Remaincalm during challenging situations.
  • Possesa valid driver’s license for operation of any of the company’s vehicles.
  • Bedependable, conscientious, and show imitative.
  • Payattention to detail.
  • Bewilling to adhere to orders, rules, and regulations.
  • Workas a team player – i.e., work with others and understand customer/ supplierwants and needs.
  • Bestable under pressure and withstand the stress associated with the job,including discomfort, unpredictable weather, and potentially hazardoussituations.
  • Workaboard the vessel for prolonged periods according to work schedule for thevessel, for example: 28 days on and 14days off or 20 on and 10 off.
  • Willingto work, as operations require, including days.
  • Livein close quarters for long periods of time and is able to work away from homefor long periods of time.
  • Bedrug and alcohol free while on company property during course and scope ofcompany business.
  • Bephysically fit to perform all essential physical demands of this job safely.
LANGUAGESKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret generalbusiness periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, orgovernmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence,and procedure manuals. Ability toeffectively present information and respond to questions from groups ofmanagers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICALSKILLS

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions,percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONINGABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data,establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensivevariety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal withseveral abstract and concrete variables.
