Description

Summary

Cathcart Rail, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, is a leading freight rail services and transportation company. We employ nearly 1,000 employees across more than 100 locations in 33 states, operating the largest railcar services network in the industry, which includes 18 large railcar repair facilities and over 75 field services locations. Our rail services division also operates three short line railroads and a dozen contract switching and transloading sites.

We are seeking candidates with rail industry or related industrial experience, including welding or mechanical assembly, to use mechanical skills in inspecting and repairing railcars to meet customer and industry standards. Entry-level trainee positions are available.

We offer a sign-on/retention bonus of $1,500, payable over the first 12 months, along with a competitive pay scale based on skills and experience. Candidates should have a safety-conscious and quality-focused mindset and enjoy hands-on outdoor work year-round.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform railcar repairs in compliance with FRA and AAR regulations.
  • Learn and follow all Cathcart Rail safety procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area to comply with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions effectively.
  • Work well within a team environment.
  • Understand railcar and tank car components and work orders.
  • Assist in disassembly of damaged railcars and tank cars.
  • Apply FRA and AAR Interchange Rules during repairs.
  • Maintain high-quality standards as per Cathcart Rail’s Quality Assurance Program.
  • Perform repairs including mechanics, grinding, touch-up painting, and decaling on various railcars and tank cars.
  • Set up and operate hand and power tools such as air arc, plasma cutter, welding machines, and oxy-fuel equipment.
  • Follow safety protocols and OSHA rules.
  • Adhere to quality processes and client-specific procedures.
  • Complete training to operate or drive equipment like forklifts, cranes, and hoists.
  • Meet welding standards per AWS D15.1 and internal training requirements.
Qualifications

  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, manuals, blueprints.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Basic math skills and practical problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to pass physical, drug, and alcohol screenings.
Physical Demands & Work Environment

The role involves outdoor work in various weather conditions and proximity to moving mechanical parts and vehicles, including working at heights and in confined spaces. It requires physical exertion, proper body mechanics, and the use of tools and protective equipment. Tasks include climbing, stooping, lifting, and operating heavy machinery.
