Job description

Position Summary:

Tack Truck Drivers at Hagar Enterprises, Inc. play a critical role in the success of our paving operations. In addition to all general CDL driver duties, this position specializes in the safe and efficient operation of a tack truck, used to apply emulsified asphalt (tack coat) to road surfaces in preparation for paving. The role involves handling materials, supporting the paving crew, and ensuring that all equipment functions properly and safely.

A valid Maine CDL with a tank endorsement and an unrestricted license—allowing operation of manual transmission vehicles—is required. Early morning start times, long shifts, and occasional weekend or night work may be necessary based on project needs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Operate the tack truck safely and precisely to apply tack coat as directed by the paving foreman and project specifications.
  • Fill and empty the tack tank with emulsified asphalt using proper procedures and safety protocols.
  • Maintain and operate the spray bar, hoses, and heating system on the tack truck, ensuring accurate and even application.
  • Perform thorough pre- and post-trip inspections of the tack truck and spray system, including fluid levels, nozzle condition, and mechanical components.
  • Keep detailed and accurate records of work performed, including areas tacked, material usage, application rates, and hours of operation.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the tack truck, both inside and out, and prevent buildup of tack residue.
  • Communicate and coordinate with other paving crew members and drivers to ensure safe and efficient job site operations.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the loading/unloading of tack and other paving materials.
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance on all equipment used, with records maintained.
  • Assist the mechanic with more complex maintenance or repair needs if needed.
  • Support general labor tasks on the crew, such as raking, shoveling, and wheelbarrowing materials when not operating the truck.
  • Operate small tools and equipment, including plate compactors, saws, and other job-related machinery.
  • Help maintain company facilities and equipment as needed.
  • Maintain a strong awareness of job site safety and immediately report any safety hazards or equipment issues.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must hold a valid and current Maine CDL with a tank endorsement and an unrestricted license—allowing operation of manual transmission vehicles.
  • Ability to pass a DOT drug screening.
  • Prior experience operating a tack truck or working on a paving crew is preferred but not required- we are willing to train the right person!
  • Ability to lift and carry loads over 40 lbs and perform physically demanding work.
  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work well in a team.
  • Commitment to maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

Work Conditions / Physical Demands:

  • Frequent driving and equipment operation in a seated position.
  • Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
  • Exposure to petroleum products, tack, asphalt, and construction site hazards.
  • Physical tasks including lifting, climbing, bending, standing, and stooping.
  • Flexibility to work long hours, early mornings, nights, and weekends.
