Job summary

CRH's APAC-Kansas, Inc., Shears Construction unit is hiring a heavy equipment operator to safely operate tack trucks and other heavy equipment on road and highway construction sites in Kansas.

You will perform pre- and post-trip inspections, follow DOT and company policies, and work with a team to deliver quality results while maintaining a safe site.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older due to safety requirements.
• CDL Class B with tanker endorsement and a clean MVR.
• Ability to pass DOT pre-employment drug screen, background check, and physical exam.
• Willingness to travel and work outdoors in all weather.
• High school diploma or GED; construction experience a plus.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate tack trucks and heavy equipment on road, site, and highway construction and paving projects.
• Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections and maintain DOT documentation.
• Follow dispatch instructions, company policies, and all applicable laws and safety regulations (OSHA/MSHA).
• Load and unload materials and assist with site tasks as needed.
• Collaborate with team, mentor less experienced workers, and help deliver quality work.

What You’ll Do

• Safely operate tack trucks and heavy equipment in road, site, and highway construction and paving projects.
• Conduct daily pre- and post-trip inspections, maintain required documentation, and ensure vehicles meet DOT and company standards.
• Follow dispatch instructions, company policies, and all applicable laws and safety regulations (OSHA/MSHA).
• Load and unload materials—occasionally manually as required.
• Monitor vehicle performance, maintain mileage logs, and keep all equipment clean and in excellent working condition.
• Work collaboratively in a team environment, maintaining constant communication and supporting co-workers.
• Assist in training and mentoring less experienced team members.
• Take pride in delivering quality work and maintaining a safe site for everyone.
• Performing general labor duties and other tasks as assigned—every day brings something new.

What We’re Looking For

• A minimum age of 18 due to workplace safety requirements.
• Valid driver’s license that meets state requirements (CDL Class B with tanker endorsement required).
• Clean driving record (MVR) in line with company standards.
• Ability to pass DOT pre-employment drug screen, background check, and physical exam.
• Willingness to travel, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and take on night or weekend shifts when needed.
• Documentation to meet I-9 requirements.
• Professional, courteous attitude and commitment to teamwork and safety.
• High school diploma or GED preferred, prior construction experience a plus.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

• Frequently required to climb, balance, and perform tasks involving physical agility.
• Regularly sit, climb, and use hand signals or equipment; occasionally stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, stoop, crouch, or reach above shoulder height.
• Lift and move objects weighing up to 25-50 lbs as needed.
• Work primarily outdoors, often in extreme weather and environmental conditions.
• Comfortable working in all weather conditions; exposed to jobsite hazards such as moving machinery, high places, airborne particles, and loud environments.
• Must have specific vision abilities, including close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, to operate equipment safely.
• Reasonable accommodations provided as necessary to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
