City of Grand Island, Nebraska is seeking a Systems Technician to perform semi-skilled and skilled technical work in maintenance, installation, repair, and support for servers, PCs, network infrastructure, peripherals, and communications equipment. The position requires 40 hours per week with some evening or weekend shifts to cover 24/7 operations, including police, fire, and 911 dispatch centers.

Job description

Perform semi-skilled and skilled technical work in the maintenance, installation, repair, and support for servers, PC’s, network infrastructure, peripherals, and communications equipment.

Salary for position is effective October 4, 2026.

Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable.

Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior when dealing with internal and external customers.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Develop, implement, and maintain IT policy recommendations including computer/network use and procurement of hardware and software.

Ensure compliance of PC software Licensing.

Maintain and troubleshoot wireless networks.

Generate reports for user departments; review input material.

Support City and Utility divisions, including 24/7 operations such as Police, Fire, and 911 Dispatch Center.

Responsible for the setup of all types of technology based devices and adding them to the network with proper operating systems installed.

Maintain a variety of records regarding computer operations including inventory, problem documentation, emails and actions taken.

Program applications and diagnose problems with smartphones/tablets and other communication devices.

Installation and maintenance of local area network hardware and software.

Procurement, installation, and maintenance of personal computers and smartphones/tablets.

Install and update personal computer software.

Assist in training staff on use of personal computers, smartphones/tablets, and software.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

Variety of software products being used by different departments within the City.

Network-security of hardware and peripheral equipment.

Basic and advanced principles of network, server, and computer technology.

Understanding of virus and malware removal.

Modern office procedures, methods, and technology equipment.

Fundamentals of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.

Basic principles and practices of electricity and electronics.

Safe work practices.

Ability to:

Work a flexible schedule of evening and day hours as needed.

Diagnose and solve computer hardware and software problems.

Must have a personal vehicle for traveling to various remote locations throughout the workday.

Work overhead (i.e. pulling cable in ceiling panels).

Maintain confidentiality in the performance of duties.

Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Meet schedules, timelines, maintain records and documentation of production output.

Operate servers, computers and peripheral equipment.

Work at high elevations.

Must have use of arms and legs.

Properly wear all safety equipment.

See and read gauges, trouble lights and control panel screens.

Recognize and distinguish colors.

Work in both outdoor and indoor environmental conditions, confined spaces, and with moving mechanical parts, with exposure to heat/cold, fumes, dust, noise, water, oil and grease.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Extensive network technology systems and software systems experience with formal specialized training courses and continuing education. Two years of responsible experience in working with network technologies, as well as a variety of associated software and hardware peripherals.

Training:

Equivalent to Associates Degree with major coursework in Computer Science or a related field, supplemented by specialized training with technology, networks and software. Minimum two years of hand on experience with information technology systems.

Working Hours:

Position will work 40 hours per week and be flexible in working some evenings (two maintenance evenings per month) or weekends depending on department needs of 24/7 operation centers (usually in emergency situations only). Normal work hours for Systems Technician is regular business hours of City Hall.

License or Certification:

Employee must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain insurability as determined by the City’s insurance carrier.

Salary:

Position will start at the entry level of the City’s salary table. Consideration may be given if experience exceeds entry level qualifications.
