Positions in the Systems Integrator job family are responsible forthe design, integration, and implementation of applications thatrequire the use of multiple technologies, tools, and disciplines.Incumbents assist customers in the definition of information needsand acquire, create, or develop applications using the optimaltechnology, platform, and/or interfaces. This requires a soundknowledge of the technologies available to provide optimalsolutions. The focus of work is on the implementation of effectiveintegrated solutions that optimize the use of technology and meetthe customer’s needs.
The Systems Integrator job family has four levels:
This is the proficiency level where incumbents apply their basicskills in integrated systems applications. They develop basic,non-routine applications requiring limited integration with othersystems, working independently with a single customer to define theinformation and reporting requirements. Alternatively, they mayserve as a member of a project team, developing components of acomplex integrated application based on application requirementsthat have been defined by others. They use a sound understanding ofthe business supported to enhance or improve the specificapplications and provide one-on-one training or assistance for thecustomer. While at this level, incumbents are increasing theireffectiveness in developing solutions in preparation forqualification at the next level of the family.
This is the career level where incumbents are fully qualified towork on all aspects of systems integration assignments. They meetwith customers to define the requirements for complex applicationswhich involve more than one customer and use multiple technologies,platforms, and interfaces and are responsible for the completedesign, testing, and implementation of assigned applications.Alternatively, they may work on defined subsets of highly complexor enterprise applications with complete responsibility for thedesign, testing, and implementation of assigned subsystems.Incumbents typically provide second tier support for assignedapplications, determining the nature of problems and finding quickresolution. Only the most unusual problems are referred to others.At this level, work will typically be balanced between customerneeds analysis and applications development work.
This is the specialist level where incumbents work with a highdegree of independence to design and implement highly complexintegrated applications. Projects typically involve severalcustomers and applications that require the integration of multiplesystems, platforms, and technologies and incumbents may serve asthe project leader for their assigned projects. Incumbents areoften a Subject Matter Expert for the customer area supported orfor a major application within an enterprise system and apply theirextensive knowledge of the customers’ business and/or theapplication supported to ensure the optimal use of availabletechnologies. They may also be responsible for providing technicalwork direction for a small group of less senior, technical staffwhich may include outside contractors or students.
This is the leadership level where incumbents are fully qualifiedin all aspects of system integration. They have a high level oftechnical expertise in platforms, applications, tools, andmethodologies along with a broad knowledge of the customer area orfunction supported. As project leaders, they are responsible forproviding technical work direction to project staff includingreviewing work, setting time schedules, and assisting in technicaldevelopment activities. The majority of their time is spent inproject planning and management activities but they may be calledupon to assist in the development of highly complex integratedsystems where their expertise is of value.
